285/70-17 Spare Tire Mod for 2013 Tacoma

Bummer! I read your post in another thread. Yeah maybe your axel is back a little + some extra tread. That sucks. Well under the bed is convenient, but probably the worst place to put it, for wheelin.

What you need is a high clearance rear bumper with a spare tire mount

So I hammered the shit out of the tabs and stuffed my 33" spare up in there but It's still rubbing on the diff when i'm flexing the rear. What would you guys do about this issue? I've been wheeling with it a couple times and I can see the rub marks on the differential. I haven't messed with the exhaust hangers or anything yet.

 

Could be that your tire is a little over 33" and/or your axle is back a little. What do you have for leaf springs? I think my Duratracs are actually 32.8"; and I have very little clearance to the diff. But I don't rub. Is your spare tight against the hitch receiver?

 

My spare is 32.7" and has about 2" away from the hitch. I have the Icon 3 leaf progressive pack. How would I pull the spare up closer to the hitch? When I raise it up it just leaves 1/2" clearance on the diff and rubs when wheeling.

 

I rub very lightly on the rear diff...this isn't a big deal right? I just don't know how to position the spare closer to the hitch receiver.

 

If I'm parked facing downhill or level I have to pull the spare back towards the hitch when I raise it. If I'm parked facing uphill it just naturally ends up against the hitch

 

You need to get the spare hard up against the hitch receiver. You may have bent your locating tabs forward too much. My spare is wedged between the hitch and those tabs. The tabs prevent the tire from going forward into the diff.

 

Ok I'll try getting the spare up against the hitch. I am gonna play with the tabs to see if I can position it closer to the hitch.

 

Yeah I only have like 1/2" of clearance to my diff, but never makes contact.

 

I originally tried to get the spare up against the hitch but I was on level ground. Hopefully parked on my driveway I can position it up against the hitch.

 

Is there a problem with it occasionally touching the rear diff? With my after market rear bumper/exhaust, I was planning on putting my 35" spare there aired down to like 5 psi (I have OBA). My 33" tire fits with plenty of room. It would just be there for when I travel accross the country and need maximum bed space. It goes into the bed when I wheel. My thinking is if it touches the rear diff and it is aired down enough it wont matter if I hit a bump in the road.

 

I would think a 35" would hit most of the time under there, even aired down. I only have about 1/2" clearance on my 33. I wouldn't recommend storing a 35 under the bed and having it interfere with the rear axel.

 

can the stock 17 inch spare rim that came on the Sport model accommodate a 285/70/17 spare tire? if not, what rims do you recommended?

It depends on your tire. Check the mfgr's website. They will show specs for the narrowest rim your tire should be mounted on. I think the Sport spare rim is 7" or 7.5" wide. Some 285's will mount on that narrow a rim, and others won't.

Pretty sure its a 7.5 inch wide wheel. Which is fine for a 285

 

thanks gang- my 2010 came with a 17x7.5 spare rim, BFG's site says 285/70/17's will fit. Follow up question: do the stock rims have enough backspacing to clear a 2.5in lift up front? I believe my XD's have 4.5in.

 

I would recommend some exhaust wrap near the spare. I was pulling a big trailer with my Z-71, one time and saw what looked like a dragging chain when looking in the mirrors, while driving. Stopped to check it, and it was molten burning rubber from my spare being too close to the exhaust. I was wondering why nobody would tail gate me that night.
