Does the spare need to be exactly the same tire diameter? I'm running 295/70/17's and I'm thinking I need to change my oem spare out... Don't think I can fit a 295 under there, but maybe a 285 mounted on the same rim. Will that trash my abs system and/or axle/differentials?
Would only be a temporary spare of course.

Great thread, lots of helpful info from the OP, thanks for that. Now that i know a 33" wheel can fit up there, i still have one reservation about mounting it up in there... seeing the condition of the original spare tire (rusted to all hell from dumb canadian road salt) I would hate to destroy a bran new FN aluminium rim with exposing it to the same crud... I was thinking about getting some kind of cover but i think that would look awful. First world problem i know but it was expensive. anyone for ideas?

I got it under there. 285 pro comp MT, given to me from a fellow TWer. Was running against the axle a bit, but I used a bungee cord, lowered the spare a bit, pulled towards the hitch, and did my best to secure it for the time being. This will be a temp fix, til I can head down to Home Depot or something a grab a ratchet strap. To add the that, I'll probably try and bend the tabs back forward more towards the original location and mess with it little by little until it gives me the same clearance I have now with the bungee cord.

Can't get my 285/70/17 spare to fit under, I have the flowmaster duel exhaust and now it's in the way of the spare tire location...oh well, guess I will need to put the spare in the bed until I can get it mounted on the back bumper...more mod's...:D

Got my 285/70/17 BFG up in there, didn't cut the tabs, just bent a bit and moved exhaust over an inch it fit but just. I probably have an inch of clearance to the diff

Don't underestimate the amount of room you can gain by moving the spare winch assembly to the rear.

It's held on by four bolts. Unbolt it, and you can see the holes. Drill two new holes further to the rear, remount it with two old holes + two new holes, and you've gained ~1" distance away from the rear diff.

    Too easy.
