I thought of running 285's as well. But after getting back from Moab in October, I reversed my thinking. I was able to do far more than I thought my truck was capable of with 3" lift, sliders, and 265's. Ran some pretty difficult trails with smart spotting. Larger tires would not have made a great bit of difference fo me. My biggest issue was my rear receiver hitch. I'm not to sure the minor trouble of fitting 285's is worth it for me. But they do look good...

I haven't went 285's yet because I'm still wearing my 31's out, but when I do I will prob be going with a heavy M/T, I have a 3.4 4x4 5 speed ext can with 3.91 gearing, do y'all think that gearing will be able to pull the heavy and tall 285's?

I had probably one of the heaviest out there, Toyo MT's. Lost some power but no real issue. I only noticed the power less after I went to bigger wheels and tires.

Plus, mines an auto so yours should take it even better

3.91 gears? That's gonna suuuuuck with 285s. Especially if you have armor or haul a lot of crap around. I would go 4.56 minimum gear ratio, or supercharge it.

    I think 4.56 is overkill for 285s... I have 4.10s but I don't think it'd be that big a difference

Gonna be real sluggish off the line forsure. Would be worse if you had a auto. I have 4.10's with a v6 5 speed, could not imagine having any lower gearing and being somewhat content. I would recommend not going anymore then a 265 unless you re-gear. With your gear ratio your rpm's at highway speeds will be high

4.56 puts it back closer to stock with 285's. I have 4.10's also and if you wheel your rig it sucks. Around town it's not a big deal just a little less pep off the line for me.

Yeah definitely terrain-dependent. Also if you're up in the mountains. I had 4.56 with 33s and it was barely adequate where I'm at. Now I have 35s and it sucks.

Yep, that's what's going in the solid axle.

Yeah 4:56 would be what I would go with, but if I end up regearing I want to also ARB lock it so it's just more and more money lol and I don't necessarily wheel, just old hunting trails and occasional snow if I'm lucky, and rarely haul anything heavy besides my bikes

How big was the power difference when you went 285s?

it's noticeable but not awful. the V6 handles it well in the city but highway leaves a bit to be desired. especially out here in MT with mountain passes and high elevation. i'm debating whether to regear or to try a set of 255s first. i think that either way i'll go to 4.56 gears tho.

    welcome to TW btw!

    Thanks for the welcoming
    I’m in between 265/75/16 or 285/75/16
I really want the 33s but I don’t want to sacrifice my power and don’t want to regear
    Just yet.
