Just a heads up about my engine replacement ordeal:

My 2017 Taco has just over 110,000 miles when it threw a code while on a road trip. I had pulled into a gas station (everything was performing normal), and filled it with gas when I was at ~1/4 tank. I started the truck after the fill and it had a suuuuper rough idle. It was in limp mode and barley ran, so I pulled behind the gas station and began to troubleshoot. My OBDII showed a P0305, P0300, P0301, P0306 code. The engine had relatively new OEM spark plugs, and I replaced the crankshaft position sensor in a last ditch effort to maybe fix something. I eventually had it towed a couple hundred miles to a Toyota dealership. They did a compression check and showed that there was no compression in cylinder 5 & 6. They suspected valve-train failure, but had never seen it before. Of the various routes I could have gone down, the best option was to replace the engine....note that I was 400 miles from home on a holiday weekend. They ended up replacing the engine but never fully tore into the old one. So in the end I never really learned anything from the experience other than the 2GR-FKS engine is not as reliable as the 1GR-FE. I have a new engine now, but cannot place any trust in it. I just wanted to put the info out there... The 2GR-FKS is a ticking time bomb.

On a slightly positive note...I talked with Toyota corporate about this issue. They were more than embarrassed and offered to pay ~25% of the cost of the repair. This is highly unusual considering I was waaay out of warranty.

2GR's aren't time bombs. Any engine can fail. Toyotas are solid, you have an anomaly. Toyota helped pay for replacement and you still drag their name through the mud on here. Classy.

    Lurked since 2017 lol.

It's likely oil starvation due to offroading.

Seems to have happened to several people recently.

@duop - how many times did you get the truck uphill steep enough to where you were smoking at the exhaust?

Your one engine failure story is one among hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of good 2GR-FKS engines on the road. Sure, there are more failure stories than just yours.

Just because it happened to you does not mean you can conclude that all 2GR-FKS's are a ticking time bomb. You're just being emotional. That said, you could say all engines are a ticking time bomb, because at SOME point they will ALL fail...sometime.

Your single experience also does not prove the 2GR-FKS is less reliable than the 1GR-FE. Back it up with some real statistics, and I'll entertain the conversation.

I pity you for feeling that you can't trust a brand new engine. You might as well sell your 2017 and scurry back to a 2015-earlier with a 1GR-FE that you can trust.

    Toodles.

1GR's are almost identical to 2GR's. The 4runner dual vvti is even closer in design.

Offering to cover 25% of replacement at 110k seems generous to me. They didn't have to offer anything. If this was a Ford or Chevy you wouldn't even be suprised you would be doing engine repairs/replacement with those kind of miles.

That sucks but its still anomalous. The 2GR has millions of miles on it.

As far as corporate paying for 25% of the repair, well thats not that uncommon either. Subraru replaced our diff, transmission, and CVs when we were out of warranty at no cost to us...

The biggest difference is the stroke. The 1GR has a longer stroke than the 2GR....giving it 500 cc more displacement.

Number of Tacoma's sold every year: 240,000

Sorry for your trouble. But your experience is not necessarily representative of the whole tacoma population. And in this case, based on the numbers it isn’t representative of the population.

There will always be failures with every make and model. It’s how common they are that is a measure of quality.

The voice of reason says that you just poked a hornet's nest and you better prepare for a battle royal and it's too late to get the starter spray and Bic lighter. They are going to sting with all kinds of excuses, but the voice of reason wants to know what happened and the truth be told we may never know. I think the Porsche IMS guys know more about their failures that 3rd gen Tacoma owners do. Is it because it's rare? I don't know, but there seems to be issues related to the top end taking a shit for random owners.

It terms of it being a ticking time bomb? Well the optimist thinks the clock has been reset for another 100k so enjoy. It's like my grandma said get all you can.

The voice of reason says a few engine failures out of hundreds of thousand of engines is both expected and normal. That’s not an excuse. Just facts.
