The total amount sold is irrelevant if we don't have access to data on actual failure rates. Like I said earlier, Toyota would never release data like that to the public. AFAIK they never even admitted certain design flaws or manufacturing defects in past vehicles, like conrod bolts coming loose on the 5S, or undertorqued head bolts on the 7M-GTE.

To your point on mods, abuse, maintenance, etc., I'm not sure how big of a factor that is in the failures documented in this forum, since most of them have been on lightly used bone-stock examples. It may just be luck of the draw.

In any case, I don't really see a reason to seek out a 2GR-equipped truck, since there seems to be only very marginal improvement in fuel efficiency vs the 1GR in a 4x4 platform. I don't understand why Toyota didn't just keep refining the 4.0 until they had the turbo engines ready for production. Hell, even the 4.6 V8s might've worked.

I bring up mods and abuse because if you’re using this forum as a gauge and seeing babied trucks blowing up then surely outside of this forum, the other abused trucks would be piling up at the dealerships with major mechanical problems and there would law suits left and right.

I agree, if given the option, in a brand new taco, 1GR or 2GR, I would pick the 1GR.

If you were buying new the last few years, you didn’t have that option and Again, if you’re gauge for engine reliability is forum failure posts, literally every other recent petrol engine offerings other than Toyota V8s, is garbage.

If you want to include the transmission into that equation it gets even worse for the playing field.

Could you please elaborate on it? Maybe I'm missing something, but the pickup tube is at the rear end of the engine?

I'm not hating on the truck. I get that shit happens and machinery is not infallible.

What I AM hating on, is the way I was treated by Toyota. I was never....EVER....treated so poorly by a car manufacturer. Their brand engagement rep really chose to give me a bad experience and absolutely have zero Fs about my opinion about it.

That's what pisses me off the most.

We are all free to spend our money as we please.

My comment was made partially in jest, but it goes both ways. If Toyota wronged you, there is nothing wrong with taking your money elsewhere.

Sorry to hear about your experiences.

I honestly DON'T want to go elsewhere, as up until that point, I had great Toyota experiences. Maybe I just got a rep that was having a bad day, or was about to quit or something...I don't know. They certainly weren't like what I normally read about in these situations.

Hey, like I said, shit happens. I paid to fix it and it's running good again, hopefully for a much longer time span! Lol

Steep grades and leaned over off camber to the drivers side. If you start seeing smoke turn off the ignition.

There are a lot of jokesters on this site, that will downplay a real problem. Mostly to protect their ego, and to defend a material they invested in.

The 3rd gen Tacoma with 3.5 engine is a problem. We don't have a 3rd gen Tacoma four cylinder 2.7 thread full of failures, do we?

Tacomaworld is a very small percentage of all 3rd gen Tacoma owners. Imagine all the engine failures we DON'T hear about on this beautiful site. The failure numbers are likely higher than the optimists would ever admit.

Or maybe opinions shouldn't be treated as fact. That is the problem with the internet. It has turned so much fiction into fact, after being repeated enough times. Cite and document, or you know, it is just more of the same. I'm no Toyota fanboy, this is my first one. It is just a little utility truck to me. If someone can show me actual facts and engineering data that the 3.5 is a bad engine, I'm all ears. An oil seep/leak and radiator hose that may need replaced doesn't make a bad engine. Any engine can break at any time for a million reasons. And all of them, regardless of manufacturer, have.

It’s too bad they stopped making the 2.7 with the 5 speed.
Unfortunately yours isn’t the first anecdote that I’ve read to that effect. Apparently Lexus is much better in that regard on the whole.

These not an oil starvation issue. May lead to it, but you will hydrolock the engine before. This issue is not exclusive to 2gr-fks.

Well, old engine was simple, new engine has extra bs in it so people who buy trucks for MPG can save their cheap wallet. That's the result of that, but its one in a 100000 thing that happened to you. I am sure there have been 1GR-FE failures too.

I agree it isn't an oil starvation issue (never said it was). That's how owners have been daylighting their blocks. PCV issue or oil drain design is most likely. The 2GR-FSE in my IS350 has almost 170k miles without any issues at all. Fun little commuter that checked all the boxes (comfortable, 300+hp, handling, 4 doors).
