It's not like TW is bevy of hundreds of thousands of 3rd gen owners or that everyone "reports" a failure. I bet in some cases a head is swapped and the typical lay person doesn't know shit other than they were given a Highlander as a loaner.

Ok. They are all time bombs. I agree with you. We need to get the message out. I think I’ll start with Tacoma 3G.com then maybe get in touch with Ralph Nader.

That's the problem with Tacoma owners, if someone has a problem all though rare thus far. The instant response is to deny and deflect. I for one would like to know the root cause of these failures.

“so I pulled behind the gas station and began to troubleshoot. My OBDII showed a P0305, P0300, P0301, P0306 code. The engine had relatively new OEM spark plugs, and I replaced the crankshaft position sensor in a last ditcheffort to maybe fixsomething.”

So that means he had a crankshaft position sensor with him (in his pocket?) that he could do the replacement with? Does it mean he replaced it shortly before, indicating that he had problems previously? Something doesn’t sound right about this. You don’t just change a crankshaft position sensor at a gas station because of an unplanned for breakdown happening to have the tools and parts to do so.

It's written like a well programmed bot. No posts. Checks just enough boxes to get everyone all emotional with the right catchphrases and then never answers again. Time will tell I guess.

It was a holiday weekend. He had a scanner with him while on a big road trip. He had a crank sensor. He towed it 200 miles when he was 400 miles from home. Then after all that he just replaced the entire engine in a truck with 110,000 miles. Fuck the vacation, tow it half way home. Drive 200 miles back and forth while they're fixing it. Can you imagine the tow bill and engine costs? The canceled vacation? If you have those funds, you're probably getting a new truck.

difficult to draw reasonable/logical conclusion when one knows

to have cylinders on 2 different bank go is highly unusual

why was the crankshaft position sensor replaced

    at what mileage

    what symptoms

valve train failure on 2 different banks .......................maybe belt/chain

    skipped a tooth= ruuuuuf idle

tooooooo many ifs ..................tooooooo many maybes

I’m assuming there’s an invoice, an RO, some kind of paper trail from the servicing dealer in case of future warranty claim right?
I mean, just in case something should pop back up, you’d want to keep the paper work right?

But of course OP has paper work, and a cell phone or camera. After all he has all kind of gadgets to tinker with his engine.

In other words OP, let us see the paper trail and we’ll go from there. There is a paper trail right?

*starts thread about engine failure with questionable details, and doesn't reply for 10 hours.

    Seems like fake news.

I wonder why someone joins a forum and doesn't contribute anything for over 2 years.

I'm just guessing the OP never owned anything powered by a 3VZ-E (3.0 Toy V6)....

Lol, out of your whole “story”, this part cracks me up the most. Brand new engine, yet you can’t trust it? Wtf yo.
I like how you used engine codes to make yourself sound smart. Where’s the rest of the story? Like why the hell did you have a crankshaft position sensor on you, ready to throw in? Lol.

The 3.0 can be made to not blow head gaskets, but the glory of flat rate, cheap and impatient people insures it will blow head gaskets.

If you have the block and head surfaced to a lowest RA you can get with updated head gaskets and ARP studs it won't blow. That's the problem, no one is going to tear the engine down to a bare block and have this done.

The 3.0 litre Toyota engine didn't have shit on some of the stuff that GM and VW produced.

I beg to differ, I've gone through two sets of heads one one complete rebuild since '95 on the 3.0 in my T100. It still doesn't run right, but is fine for the way I currently use the truck. Eventually my plan is to swap-in a more modern/reliable engine.

All that having been said, I've never been left stranded by the 3.0 in my T100, just annoyed by it more than anything.

3.0L was a POS. Made in Japan was the main issue. America knows how to make a V6.
