Why would you want to hack up a VW Thing to install a Subaru engine? The best place for a Subaru engine is the dumpster

I don't get it at all plus they're likely dogs off the line since i doubt people are even re-gearing them.

I heard of this subaru engine in older air cooled vw too beetles and things. I think it's about getting more power than the air cooled. It's also heavier and obviously you need to put a radiator somewhere the vehicle wasn't designed for.
The original is better IMO. Keep it classic

Kid at work just bought and lifted a Crosstrek, he doesnt want a truck or old rust bucket, he wants to explore and keep good mileage.

It kept up with the big guys just fine, but lack of low range and real frame really limits them to novice trails. I would have lifted my turbo forester if the seats were more comfortable.

All of you fretting about engines letting go at 100k miles....

Apparently the rear diffs will disintegrate waaaaayyyy before that.

Or so I’ve read in the third gen subforum of Tacoma World.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, #5 and #6 are on opposite banks, right.

So something happened to both LH and RH rear cylinders, if we believe the data given.
I cant even really come up with a single (1) source that would cause both #5 and #6 to loose compression at the same time. Am I missing a simple single cause.

Take a look at my Albums page and you'll see that the car in-question currently has a turbo-charged Ford engine installed in it, which until recently met my needs. However now that engine is getting tired and hard to source parts for so I'm looking to upgrade to a more modern engine which can make the same (or more) power without using a Turbo, Intercooler and premium fuel.

I'm just curious, what *facts* are you basing your opinion of Subaru engine's on? This will be my first Subaru build so I'm excited to learn a new platform. Feel free to DM me so we don't take this thread too far off-topic.

Bingo, more power in (roughly) the same sized footprint, plus air-cooled engines are not the extreme value they used to be. The last one I had built for my 'Buggy cost ~$5K and that was just for a long-block and assembly.

In the case of my VW Thing, the car was previously changed-over to a liquid-cooled engine twenty years ago. Whoever did the conversion knew what they were doing as the radiator is partially hidden by the rear seats and rear deck (dual electric fans help keep it cool). I've been playing around in the classic VW world since '01 and have seen some really bad/hack-job conversions. Mine is one of the cleaner ones.

Having said all that, I'm still a fan of the air-cooled VW engine. I run a 1776cc in my 'Buggy and it's perfect for that car and for the way I use it (these days it rarely see's dirt and mostly just runs around town). Conversely my VW Thing see's some pretty heavy off-road use, has larger A/T tires, a full roll cage, can seat four adults and is a bit on the heavy side (2,800 LBS). For the type of use that car see's, I'd have to run a 2,000cc+ air-cooled motor which would (in my experience) run hot on slow trails, require an external oil cooler, would likely be dual-carbbed and would likely not be as reliable as a more modern powertrain. Plus I like for my stuff to be a little bit 'different'.

Those G Bodies are not too bad a candidate for a MT Swap either because they are all based on a Malibu platform which was available with MT, if I am not mistaken they should all even have the factory hole in the firewall for a clutch cable too.

My mom needed a new car. She hauls a lot of crap, so I thought a subaru would be a good car for her. AWD for the winter, storage, not too big, etc. She asked her local car repair shop (which has 4 locations and I know one of the managers) if they were reliable, and they told her they fix far more subarus than any other type of car, hands down, not even close. As a matter of fact, they took her out to the parking lot and showed her how many subarus were there for repairs and she was shocked. They told her NOT to buy one. She didnt, got a camry instead.

It’s because Subarus are largely made in Japan, including engines and transmissions, with some assembly stateside. Once they start making them entirely in Mexico or USA quality will go up.

A co-worker just had the dealer install a new long block in his all stock dog mom Subaru Forester because it was just out of warranty. He said he regrets ever doing it because the car is now having transmission problems.

The joys of oil consumption and Subaru life, where you need to swing by Costco for cheap oil.
