I’ll probably use one of them step-bits and oversize a little

Heck.......if the fellas at Orange County Choppers can put a whole motor cycle together with one, what harm could it do to my engine?

They're fine with me, been sporting around in VW poptops for 16 of the past 30 years. Not a fan of the $100k Class B's mostly seen but something like the above or Home - GTRV Camper Van Conversions

Lift a FWD with traction control, slap some good tires on it and you can get to a lot of nice places. A lifted AWD Sienna poptop would be nice.

I even wonder how it was driven. From what i've experienced from mine, they run very smooth, every bit as well as my v8 4.7 tundra, and that had nearly 300k miles before i sold it. Its still running great today.

I’m currently dealing with the same exact issue my 2018 Taco PRO has 130,000 miles. She ran strong until it went into the same limp mode. Toyota said it’s a valve train failure at a cost of 7,000 to fix or a new motor at a cost of 19,000. These trucks used to be bulletproof. My 1998 4Runner has 346,000 miles and going strong. Anyone know any good Toyota mechanics ?

If true this is a lucky OP, I have a 2017, 70k miles. I’m the second owner bought it with 30k from dealer. Ran flawless. Still does really except it burns oil now…. Cylinder 4 is scored, don’t know how or why. I dont off road and I’ve changed the oil between 4-6000 miles. Religiously.

No warrant left, spoke to Toyota corporate said they will not assist because I never had it serviced at a dealer. Have all the receipts for oil changes they don’t care Replacing the engine as soon as I find a decent one.

    just crappy luck

Really hate to recommend this, but I would trade it in. If traded in at a Toyota dealership, at least you know they will give the next owner a certified pre owned Toyota warranty of some sort. A 70k mile Toyota shouldn't have a bad engine, even under the worst circumstances.

Still don't understand the folks who build off roaders and overlanders around a 2GR-FKS tacoma. Gamblers....

Because 12 valve Cummins Rams are no longer in production.

Just because 10 people on a forum had engine failures, doesn't mean this engine is any less reliable than anything else available. I imagine the failure rate is still well below 1% of total units produced. Any vehicle (wet sump) that is subject to extreme grades for an extended period of time will suffer from oil starvation, there's no way around it. Perhaps a more robust oil pan baffle design would help, but gravity will always do its thing. Go to any other forum that discusses off-roading and overlanding with other brands, they ALL have problems.

Most of the failures in this thread and on this site were from normal driving. Not off roading.

Thousands of broverlanders with a ton of steel bolted to their tacos have absolutely no issues.

It's rather clear by now after nearly a decade of production that the 3.5 v6 has some design and manufacturing shortcomings like chronic seal and gasket leaks, leaking plastic coolant bypass pipe, oil starvation issues on steep grades etc. Most people only ever do highway and city driving under low intensity conditions and so don't experience catastrophic failures like the off roaders have experienced and posted about on here and other places.

Also, the 2GR-FKS was only meant to be a stop gap between the 2nd gen 4.0 and whatever direction Toyota was still figuring out for the future of its mid sized trucks
