Ok, update. I rec'd the clockspring from Krugger Auto today. Side by side comparison with the original yielded no differences whatsoever so I didn't even bother with pics. Considered popping it open a bit to compare the actual wire ribbon but decided to not risk jack'n up a brand new part. 15 min to put everything back together and waited a little bit for battery to drain before hooking up the air bag wires (definitely stood to the side with eye protection on just in case). Went for a test drive and no annoying red light woooooooooooooooooootttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!! horn and cc worked perfectly as well. $85 otd
    Decided not to test airbag:rolleyes:

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS AS AN EASY DIY TO SAVE MUCHO MONEY!!!!
IN FACT I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE ADDED AS A STICKY OR AT LEAST TO THE LIST SINCE THIS IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM. :) However, the risk of working with the airbag may be more than many would want to assume.

Huge thanks to MYSUV for the great write-up.:D

DAMN YOU! but congrats as well. I spent most of the time reading the tutorial and making sure I understood it 100%. I should have shopped around more, but I just felt it was right to get the part from the dealer. I could have saved $200 bucks and used that towards an avid light bar god dammit!

I also agree with this being added to one of the stickies, it is super useful and hopefully a life saver.

I ordered my clockspring from my local Napa Auto Parts store. Took a couple of days to get here and cheaper than Toyota.

Just did mine with this write up and took me all of 15 mins. I bought mine off eBay and was $30 plus shipping I think. Tried it out just now and air bag light turned off and cruise control works now. I will open up the old one to look inside and see the defect

Awesome write-up (yes I know this is old, but still very very relevant).

I got a new on on ebay, the part numbers listed on the part itself did not match my TRD-Off Road's (2010) but I installed it anyway. Everything so far is working well, minus steering wheel controls (but I don't have my adapter installed to the new radio so I can't test it yet). Horn works, and the airbag light went off like a champ though!

There is one last thing... on mine I had to swap a part onto the clock spring from the old one. It just snaps off, has a large grey connector going to it (I'm presuming this is steering controls or something). It snapped right onto the replacement no issues.

Thanks for the instructions, did it yesterday.. had to wait to get steering puller, but finally steering came off almost by itself.

Now I have to do it again because the clockspring that I have (and the one shown in the pictures) doesn't have the gray connector (maybe for steering controls?) like the one on my truck, so I need to order another one.

edit: just read the post above mine... you're syaing the gray thing is swappable? damn I have to check that tomorrow!!!

Why wouldn't you let the dealer do it for free... There is a recall on the clock spring and I don't believe recalls expire.

Beachboy, I think your '09 is covered by the recall. But either the dealer or Toyota will reimburse you something for your effort. And yes the grey thing is swappable.

I have a Canadian truck and they are not recalled *yet*...

My gf really don't like the no airbag and no horn situation so I'll change it its quick.

If I get on the recall I'll swap the old one back and get it done so I'll have a spare (if I can pit that orange tab back in)

Great write up. My only problem was that my horn stopped working. Dealer wanted $450 to replace the clockspring. I paid $229 with shipping to Discount Toyota Parts and got the replacement clockspring. This project took me about an hour.

As noted above there was a grey connector that needed to be snapped off the old spring and snapped on to the new one. Here is a picture of the grey connector. It seems to have a sensor to measure the movement of the steering wheel so maybe it's related to the vehicle stability control? I don't know.

I do not have the airbag light issue but i have a squeak coming from behind the air bag when i turn the wheel to the right and then back to center.

Any idea what it is and how i can make it stop squeaking?

im doing this right now in southern california, I had to transfer that gray connector also, and now i hook up everything and my horn goes off all the time. I checked the prongs and im guessing they were making contact when i would plug the connector in. Lets hope for the best.
