I feel like i saw a video where you just need to trim the dust shield a tad to fit the 4runner calipers. Can anyone confirm that? If i can avoid replacing my dust shields i would like to.

I’ll probably start gathering the list of parts and ordering them soon. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t do this when I replaced my wheel bearings a few months ago. But at least we put anti-seize all over everything so they should come back off a lot easier this time.

And with 33s in my very near future, I don’t see why I wouldn’t do this upgrade.

    A thing or two...
The caliper should clear the dust sheild. You need to trim the dust shield to clear the larger rotor.

Don’t antiseize the four bolts going into the steering knuckle, they have lock tight type substance on them

If that is the case then I would just go with the correct dust shields because that would be a lot of trimming. I saw somewhere that it was just trimming the notch out where the caliper sits flush with the dust shield.

I did this brake swap over the weekend. The improvement is amazing! No more shuddering when the brakes are applied...I was on my second set of warped rotors in 40k miles.

The whole job took about 3 hours with a hub puller. We failed to get the hubs off without the claw last time.

Did you also replace the dust shield?

You would need to trim the lip off the dust sheild all the way around to clear the rotor which in turn would sacrifice most of the rigidity to not bend toward the rotor and rub on it. Or you could bend it back to and keep the rigidity until you got it caked with mud or snow and it was pushed back toward the rotor and started to rub it possibly with or without noise letting you know it was happening. I am the mod similar to this before the prime of camping season this year except I am going with the 5th gen T4R rotors and calipers for the extra width and heat dissipation.

Yes, I wouldn't be comfortable just trimming the old one. The swap would have been closer to 1.5 hours without taking the hubs off to get them replaced.

To anyone who's done this and swapped to stainless lines at same time, how many bottles of fluid did you go through bleeding the lines?

I'd have two on hand. I've done both the brake swap and stainless brake lines, and it takes about a bottle each time, best to have extra sitting around.

Yeah I agree with 2 pints. I replaced my “s” lines going into the caliper and 1 soft line that the crimp let go on and used just under 1 pint.

I buy a quart bottle, and usually use at 3/4 of it.

Any recommendation on what dot 4 fluid to buy locally? Napa, Autozone, Advanced Auto, Oreily...

Not sure if i missed this on the thread, but if anyone needs to replace the hard lines that go between the calipers and the brake hoses, here are the toyota part numbers :

    47318-04130
    47317-04080

i've been compiling parts over the past couple of weeks and hoping to accomplish this upgrade soon...

Those are the part #'s for the original tacoma parts. You want the 4Runner parts since you are going to 4Runner calipers.

    They are 47314-60311 and 47317-60131.
