    Great job @craigFLA! After getting my wife's new 5th gen 4 runner I noticed the bigger calipers and discs up front, and was always curious about swapping.

    I really want to get better stopping power. I drive slow but with 35's is take a truck a bit of effort to stop. I've gone through a few sets of performance pads like you too, and they don't feel a whole lot different.

    I also agree that drilled rotors are the worst. They weaken the rotors and I've personally seen them crack between holes. Ask anyone using brakes aggressively, like on track cars, and no one with experience runs them. Maybe slotted rotors but never drilled.

    Keep us posted on how they work out!

    Don't let it get to you. I just seems there are a few TW members that "get they're rocks off" by being a dick. Threads like this is why TW can be great. Someone discovered something and contributed which make it easier for others to follow. By not posting it actually robs members of information that is appreciated. Best thing to do is not respond or comment "thanks for your contribution" then ignore.

    Did you notice how many likes you have for your post? 14 members appreciate your efforts and posting.

    Have you ever tried heat paint on your rotors? It is a thermal compound that changes color with temp. (thermochromatic) usually applied in the vent slots. Over the years I have seen guys install race type pads that never get hot enough to work properly and guys that are hard on brakes using pads for normal driving that get too hot to be effective. Just a thought I have no ideal how hard your using your brakes.

    If that's partially directed at me I had no intention of being a dick, but if that's how you feel it's fine. No I didn't read the entire article because when someone is talking about "warped rotors" it's almost always uneven material transfer, perhaps from run out perhaps not. The Stop Tech article @bconrey posted says a lot about braking, including the warped rotor 'issue'. How your driving differs from 41 years of vehicles I have no clue but unless another one of those was a Tacoma set up exactly how your current one is, it's kind of hard to compare. A mid size car vs a truck are 2 different animals with 2 different braking characteristics-including the engineering behind them.

    Your write up is fine and hopefully it solves the issue for you and others on here.

    I never pretend to be an expert - I'm here to learn and share - but I've clocked over a million miles across 12+ vehicles (including two other Toyota trucks and two sport sedans which I absolutely flogged) and this is the only time I've had the issue. I'm puzzled by it. If nothing else I'll have an enjoyable weekend upgrading the brakes on my truck and more stopping power when I tow.

    It's really for people into extreme breaking but it can be helpful. Lining compounds are designed to operate best at a certain temps obviously a normal drive's brake temps are low and that's what OEM stuff is designed for going beyond those temps the braking force drops but the higher temp pads have to reach a certain temp before they become effective. It goes all the way up to bright red glowing rotor temps.

    Question, wouldn't a larger than stock rotor and caliper throw out the proportioning between front and back? Did you need to pick up a proportioning valve or something to balance out the braking pressure between front and back?

    Well regardless of why u go thru brakes so fast. I aplaud you for having the balls to try this and post it up.
    I'd think the over size tire guys would want this for stopping power.
    I don't even have a second gen but the part numbers etc that you put in the op makes this a slam dunk.

    Rotor should not impact proportioning...The caliper bore and diameter is identical between the WG and WH casting OE calipers...only difference being the mounting "height" to accommodate larger rotor...so no changes were required.

    Thanks for bringing this up as I did not in my OP, but certainly did research and verify this early on before purchasing parts. Several months installed and everything remains great. Of all the upgrades/mods I've done this may be my favorite..which is saying something if you've ever looked up my interior/stereo build thread...lol...

    @craigFLA Great research and write-up. Even though I personally never once found my tacoma's brakes lacking, and the original pads and rotors lasted me 173,000 Km with no shudder (I don't drive in stop-n-go traffic either), I like what you did here. A very cost effective brake upgrade, using commonly available parts, kudos to you, well done!

    I'm definitely interested in solutions for X-Runners with a 5-lug wheel. The TRD BBK kit is nice, but it runs $2300. Would much rather install bigger Toyota OEM (4x4?) calipers if I could find some that would bolt up to my truck, as well as a suitable rotor.

    While searching "Brake" threads on TW, I never saw this one until I found a link in another thread.
    1st....... Nice Job @craigFLA, hope you're still hanging around.
    Hate to see early members get discouraged with the board.
    I'm amazed this faded away into the archives.
    So it's been six months and was wonderin' if we could get an update.
    I'd love to do this, but I'm fast tracking a brake job and don't have the time to research fit.
    Not to mention the weather/snow.
    60k on brakes and ready for pads and rotors.
    Also have Hub/Bearing Assemblies going on, so this would be the perfect time
    Have a 2010 TRD Sport with the 5 Spoke 17" Sport Wheels (on 1" Spacers).
    "Looks like" about 3/4" +/- Caliper/Wheel clearance.
    Also have an aftermarket set with A/Ts, the stock wheels have Blizzaks I run for a couple months in the winter.
    The OP Rotor Specs show a 0.741" increase in diameter. Doesn't leave much room for a larger Caliper.
    Has anyone tried this on a 17" wheel?
    craigFLA, might you have done before and after measurements, center of hub to outermost point of Caliper?
    Anyway, nice job researching this, thanks for your contribution. :proposetoast:

    Sorry Cape Codder...just saw your questions. I did not pull measurements...but in hindsight probably should have. Knew I had 20's but should have thought that info would be needed by those running smaller diameter wheels.

    Eitherway sounds like Bsheriff11 installed with 17's and good results...so hopefully you are able to do so as well.

    Regarding updates....its been several months and bunches of miles, hot Florida day turnpike panic stops, etc. etc. and I could not be happier. No issues whatsoever...still one of my favorite upgrades (besides maybe my audio system https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/craigs-ms-8-install.201919/
