I used remanufactured 14WA Brake calipers for 2010-2014 4Runners that I picked up from O’Reily’s. I had to disassemble them i.e. remove the pistons, to have them powder coated red. I then purchased an OEM Rebuild kit from Toyota.

    Here’s the completed project:

I just picked up a set of the WH calipers off a 4Runner at a local parts yard. The backing plates weren't worth salvaging so I will order new ones. Gonna rebuild those and get to gathering parts for this! I can't wait. I hate my brakes, especially when towing or loaded.

Thank you craigFLA for the information!!

Damn, this looks like a good idea. Towing does seem to be pretty hard on the stock brakes.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Interesting! Thanks for the write up!

After about 200k in 2nd gen Tacoma's I have never had a brake warp, or wear out. I replaced the pads and rotors on my 2008 with the 2nd or 3rd front wheel bearing.

At least 50k of that has been towing a car hauler, or my enclosed

And my 11.5 mpg lifetime average says I am pretty heavy footed/work the truck.

Sorry you have had issues, and glad you found a good solution! I have had that experience on other vehicles, constant braking failures (as in needing repair not total failure)

I think outside of driving it is a crap shoot, OEM rotors in my experience are the only ones you should buy for most Toyota's. As in from Toyota, not OEM replacements.

Question on the 4runner brake calipers that are used. This thread says to use 2010-2014 4runner brake calipers. However the 4runner got a mid cycle refresh for the 2014 model year. So shouldn't we use 2010-2013 calipers?

Front brake rotors and calipers should be from:

2010-2015 4Runner or GX460. This information is based on fitment guides for Centric.

2016+ has small changes to the bolt hole/thread size.

Lots of good information on this thread

Going to order the parts to do this, have a quick question.

Do the new calipers use the bracket from the old caliper?

The calipers From Napa do not have a mounting bracket

Any 3rd genners lurking in this thread check to see if this mod works on our trucks as well?

    @VanaSTL-
This thread is titled and targeted to 2nd Gen, so might be best to start a new thread for 3rd Gen, rather than derailing/sidetracking this one.

Perhaps cut and paste the critical info from prior posts, and/or use a couple hot links to save yourself time/effort when you start your thread.

    Just a thought...

I don’t think the brakes changed much from 2nd to third gen if at all. Look up the caliper part #s from 2nd to 3rd and see if they are the same. Should work if so.

I upgraded the calipers on my '01 Tundra to the '04 size calipers and it made a big difference. I also converted the rear brakes on my Corolla tuner to discs.

    This should be fun.

Explain to me how I'm derailing this thread, the fact is there are a lot of commonalities between 2nd gen and 3rd. Example being the suspension is identical. I don't see how asking if anyone has attempted this mod or has any information about fitment to a 3rd gen is sidetracking this thread. The only person here that is getting off topic is you by calling me out telling me to go elsewhere. That's pretty ignorant. I have a better chance of getting my questions answered in an already established thread on topic than creating a brand new thread in the 3rd gen section with a bunch of people referring me to this already existent thread.

Now if I asked a question like "What size tires can I fit with a 2" lift" in this thread, I could understand you telling me to GTFO but I'm not. So again, I don't see what the problem is.

P.S. I can't tell the tone of your post, I took it as offensive so if that's the case I'm just being Defensive, if not and you were legitimately trying to help, then I appreciate the pro-tip but I'm going to stay here for awhile to see if any of these knowledgeable members have a quick answer for me.
