2nd gen maintenance required light

Obviously, you're free to use whatever you (and your wife) are comfortable using.

I see that but, based on how we know it's constructed, I wouldn't trust the well-being of my engine to it.

 

I use the Fram filter most of the time, and it is "rated" for 10k miles, only because it comes with the 5qt Mobil1 synthetic for pretty much free but I change it, along with the oil, every 5k.

 

update to if it'll work before the light actually comes on: just performed the reset, and got the 5 dashes that count down. then it went away, and returned to normal display, though the trip meter was reset (since I have a '12).

So I'm assuming it reset the counter. I'll know for sure I guess in the next 1000 miles.

 

Mobil 1 Extended Performance. It's rated to 20k but 10k is plenty for me. I bet if I sent off a sample they'd tell me it'd be fine to run to 20k but

 

Again, oil is only half the equation. You need to ensure you don't exceed the service life of your filter(s) too.

The Amsoil I run is rated for 25K miles, but the longest use it sees in my Tacoma and my wife's BMW 340ix is 10K miles. The stuff that goes in my GT500 and C7Z doesn't see more than a few thousand miles before their annual changes.

 

In a cut open comparison of various filter's it seemed the OEM's were the best made. I have a box of 10 yota filters I just use for now since they are on hand.

 

I agree - OEM are (one of) the best choices for our trucks, but the manual calls for changing them at 5K miles. They're all I use on my truck, but I change them as directed.

 

Engineering always overengineers. Nothing fails at its 'rating'. I feel perfectly comfortable running them 10k.

 

engineers over-engineer, but marketers always over-market. and the executives often go with the marketing over the engineering. so I tend to stay on the conservative side with things like this.

 

Well that's why extended performance oil started out as 15k miles and now is guaranteed to 20k. Annual Performance was their 20k at one point. That one's gone now. Consolidation.
I'd be curious to see a side by side comparison between the OEM and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter.

 

The MAINT REQUI light bugged for for at least 500 miles. My oil level was fine. This afternoon I finally did a search of MAINT REQUI

Good sharing. If you like to speed up your engine oil changes I’ve attached a picture of the valve that makes it a lot quicker plus you can drain the oil out when it’s hot or without making a mess or burning your hands.
And yes spend the money on synthetic, go with the Mobil-1 products although I am admittedly biased

just my opinion but I’ve been a mechanic since 1978 and never have seen a need for something like this. If you are burning your hands you need to let it cool down before the drain. Righty tighty, lefty loosey. It doesn’t get any more simple than that.

They're out here trying to change their oil, draining their transmission, refilling their radiators and then coming here for help.

 

But on the other hand, I found my oil drain plug waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overtightened from the dealer. Not once, but every time they did it. If you have to use a breaker bar to remove the drain plug, it's freaking overtightened! My oil pan has escaped having the threads stripped and I want to keep it that way. That's the reason I no longer have the dealer do oil changes.

about that, 07 Taco, I bought new TPMS Sensors on Amazon, mid rang that people with 2nd gen Tacos has liked. The pressure light comes on the first time I go on the highway (%95 city driver).
I have a bad sensor right? in 5he past I have gone to a tire place to have them installed & reset, do I need a tool to reset them when I replace the bad one?
