Jeez, what a PITA it would be to do that with box on… FWIW, I would just cut out the flimsy x-brace and built a stronger one out of tube. Set it up high so you can fit a bigger spare in the stock location.

Amen. That did cross my mind too. Seen some nice setups. My spare isn’t there anyway

Mine isn’t either, well, sometimes it is. It’s nice to have the option to tuck the spare under while still having the bed free for truck stuff

Very true. I ended up with a swingout and mounted an airtank and cross bar there now. But good idea in case I decide to ever remove the swingout.

I think it was between 11 gauge and 1/8". 11 gauge keeps coming to mind for some reason.

Just spent an hour reading this thread. Awesome ideation, fabrication, and execution. Gives me motivation to get out and do the little projects I’ve got queued up haha. Sweet build! Can’t wait to see the finished product! Subd

My machinist fingers didn't pick up an .005 difference on this one.

Lol!!! I think I used a gauge to test its thickness before setting up my welder. Foggy though due to the severe dehydration I dealt with at the time.

I got the rear end torn down pretty good over the weekend. The front leaf hangers are a bit crusty but structurally fine. Toyota doesn't want to sell me replacements even though they have a part number, they recently deemed them as non serviceable LOL. Whatever, I will sand blast these and paint them. They also don't want to sell me this inner reinforcement piece when they definitely have a part number designated for it. I plan on cutting the section in red off to weld on A36 1/8 plate. Once I fix the walls on the frame I will install this reinforcement piece I found from autorust.com. Additionally I plan on painting and applying 3m burshable seam sealer in between all metal pieces. The rust repair is slowing me down but she's coming along.

Rust repair isn't slowing you down. It's part of the thorough process for your project. Stay the course.

Have you considered getting Hammer Hangers if the budget allows?

It's the front, static leaf hanger he's talking about. Not the rear hanger that has the shackle (which would be replaced by HH)

@Airdog has a newer set. He could add some insight on how he came about his. Possibly JD Fabrication? I am not sure.
