That is why I jumped to an R series. I could just give it the HD treatment if I blow this one up.

I always thought the earlier 2nd gen 2.7 didn't have the secondary air injection, like the v6, but was added later down the road?

Nope. The 2TR had it the whole time. My 08 has the SAIS.

I pulled the trigger on a used motor with 54k yesterday. I can send you an OEM manifold if that would help at all with this, although i know you'd probably need the truck for fitment. Figured i'd throw it out there either way!

Speaking of 35s...I'll be in that club shortly, I think. Hopefully what I've got done already will be enough.

Yup, 4.88. Better than stock clutch. Header. Snorkel coming soon.
Need a CMC and all the other cutting and beating.

Brakes are my other concern. And wheel fitment, I've got spacers and 3 different wheels to try though.

I think you'll be good to go since you've got the 5spd.

IMO, doubt it. I wouldn’t even touch 285/75/17 with 4.88, but all depends on what’s considered acceptable performance. You wouldn’t even be back to stock (if you run the RPM numbers on Grim Jeeper with R156f tranny) and IMO even the 5spd is undergeared from factory with 3.91 with my 245s I have on now while I make up my mind. Heavy truck for 160hp

personally I’d want to take as much stress off the 2.7 as possible, but again, to each his own and I understand not wanting to turn 3k at ~73mph (5.29 + 315s)

around town all good, but every time I head up to the mountains or actually off-road Is where you’ll wish you had more gear. 2nd/3rd gen guys need to realize it’s not the same as light 1st gen guys with same motor

I feel it'll be closer to stock-ish performance, certainly want to be able to get out of my own way. The other 4 cyl folks I know have now gone above 35s but with 5.29 gears

Alright! That would be a great help. Can get some flanges made. Would ultimately need a truck though, to make a jig.

Yeah i guess acceptable performance is all relative. But ive run 4.88s in my 2nd gen 5spd with 66lb 295/70/17s and im sure the 4.88s will be sufficient to turn 35s as they're not much heavier. I agree, 5.29s would probably be the way to go if you stay n/a. That being said my truck w/ 5.29s turns 3400rpms at 75mph and 33s, so im not sure youd really want anything less than a 34 with 5.29s.

4.88s will be fine, just dont get in any hurry

I think 4.88s will be a nice compromise of gear and less revs on the hwy. Regearing is a big game of give and take unfortunately. When's someone gonna come out with a quick change rear end for our trucks? :D
Sure thing man, i will try to find a box that i can send it in. I figured that'd be the case. Maybe here in a few months i can drive down and you can use my truck to make a jig.

Could just add a "crawl box" but with taller gears. Instead of having a typical 5:1 ratio in the crawl box, you could put in 1:1.1

I think it might be hard to shift it on the fly though.
