So I've been trolling around on toynation also.

First of all; I'm pretty sure that I saw a mod that referenced the front driveline not powered. (Of course o can't find it again)

Secondly, I read that there are separate forks in our tcases; one to engage the front driveshaft and another one that would do the Hi-Lo switching.

If this is the case, we've got some (testing, butchering, experimenting, playing), work to do.

A few of you guys have commented and PM'd me from this thread. Figured I'd let you know that there is an update over here on the 2lo kit. There will be a small number available fairly soon and pricing will get updated in the next couple of days.

I don't really want to deter from the original purpose of this thread so it will be my last post in here. If you are comfortable with wiring then I'd recommend you do the DIY as it's an interesting project!

Just because it can be done doesn't make it a good idea. Back in the stone ages when you actually had to get out and manually lock your hubs it was possible to place vehicles in 4lo, but no power was getting to the front wheels. Manufacturers had warnings in owners manuals advising people NOT to do this. I've seen broken U-Joints from those who tried. You are sending more torque to one axle than the components are designed for.

With modern trucks with auto locking hubs there is no longer any reason to warn drivers not to do this. Unless they bypass the system.

I agree with you to a certain extent. If you are using 2lo common sense needs to be applied. You won't want to be using it to get yourself unstuck or to pull a stump out of the ground (wouldn't recommend that one in 4lo either) or pull your buddy's truck out of the ditch etc.

Essentially anything you would be okay doing in 2hi like backing up trailers in tricky or inclined spots, steep switchbacks, boat ramps. Things that you would benefit from the crawl speeds but normally be binding up in 4lo.

Many people have used 2lo for years with no troubles at all. You are correct though that there is potential for damage if misused, which is true for most things.

For the guys running the 6 speed tranny the 2 Lo would be a very nice option. Many times I have to ride the clutch because 1st gear is to long. I end up in 4 Lo and hard to maneuver with all 4 locked in. Some trails I drive on you have to be in Lo and this 2 Lo is the best option for me to save my back and clutch.

I find the mod very useful for the 6sp.Mostly for backing trailers. The reverse ratio is way too high. The stock front diff is open so your really only working the spider gears. Not any torque just rpm. As long as you're not spinning tires there is not much relative rpm so no damage. Just don't use 2wd low in low traction situations and your fine with the stock front diff.

If my truck was auto, I wouldn't have done this mod. But I'm not out rock crawling on the trails either...

Anyone do this mod on a 2010 truck? Were the wire colors different?
Which of the two connectors are used on a 2010?
    Thanks, Mike

I installed this module about two weeks ago on my 2013. Works great. Get the instructions for operations and installation, they have been posted here somewhere. I did not use the external switch. Very nice build quality and works just as claimed. I have the 6 speed, great addition when situation demands lower reverse gear.

I'll second Troyken's post. This mod is great. My primary use is when I'm crawling around in tight areas and don't like slipping or pulsing the clutch. Without the kit, 1st isn't low enough and 4 Lo is irritating in tight turns. The 2 Lo mod is perfect for this. If I do manage to get myself stuck, 4 Lo, a-trac and the locker are still usable.

Hey guys, this thread is for the 2 Lo DIY Mod, I think you guys would want to post up in this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/posts/18202869/
Either way, has anyone done the 2 Lo DIY Mod on a 2010 truck and could help me with the correct connector and wire colors??

My is a 2010. It's been awhile but I think all wire colors are same as beginning of this thread.

I finally did this 2 Lo DIY mod, thanks to the Covid19 stay at home order and (thus) having some extra time on my hands. It works great. I used a 4PDT relay and 2 pair of 4 place molex style connectors so I can pull the relay out and restore the wiring if the need ever arises. Thanks to the OP for the schematic.20200416_145407.jpg 20200416_180052.jpg

I know it's been a while, but hoping to do this mod soon. Do you happen to remember what gauge wire you used for this mod? Thanks for a great write up.

@07tacoswb I am looking at doing this mod.

Where did you find a DPDT relay? The only relays I can find are single pole.

    Thanks.

I used an Omron MY4 DC12; which is a 4PDT relay with a 12vdc coil. IMO, using one relay cleans up the installation slightly. You can purchase these relays (online) from Digi-Key Electronics.

    Thank you.

I was looking at Digi-Key earlier today and was quite surprised at the number of 4PDT relays there are.

@Mongoose trying to get materials together for this mod, was wondering if you could tell me what gauge wire I'll need. Thanks
