My set-up is now working, thanks to Alan's help. He has been invaluable in the process. Huge kudos to him.

Also, a big thanks to Brady for looking things over as well and offering suggestions. I absolutely appreciate the time both of you spent on this.

Here's a few pictures for those who asked. The wiring is slightly off in these, but you wouldn't be able to tell bc it's only off by a few terminals on the relays. The general idea is exactly the same and I'm showing these just so the reader will have an idea of what the completed mod looks like. Also note that this is before the wiring is cleaned up with zip ties and before I run a Carling switch over to the left side of the steering column.

    Everything installed:

The separate ground wire from the other plug in the 4WD ECM:

The switch that I have wired in temporarily.

If anyone has any questions, please let me know. I'll be happy to try to pass along any knowledge that was passed along to me.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. It has been over a year since I did it, so I didn't remember exactly how the wiring was. I just checked his diagram to make sure the wires were matching up to their own wire and not how the pairs were interacting with each other.

Glad you got it figured out though!!

Great write-up and I'm going to be doing this someday soon.

Is there any way to get a bigger diagram on page one? It's a bit hard to see the details..

    Thanks

Right click on image, select "view image". When image opens up hold the ctrl key down and click "+" until you get the size you want.

Subbed. This looks like a worthy mod, a bit scary hacking up the stock wiring though

Makes me love my 1st gen after reading all the work that goes into this. Mine is simple: Shift into 4 low, don't lock hubs. Drive is 2WD low.

Not very many 1st gens even have manual hubs though. Although you could do a conversion for cheap if you can find the parts in a junkyard.

Yeah, depends a lot on the year of the 1st gen. all of the 1995.5 through 99s that I have seen are manual hubs. But I admit of course I have never seen EVERY 1995.5 through 99 that is out there. :)

Sweet ... been wondering how to get a clearer/bigger image.

 x1 ... probably why I've been debating this since the thread was started.

All done and working properly. MANY thanks to everyone who helped me with this. It's not the most difficult job in the world, but it sure is a lot harder than doing the same mod on a Dana 18 transfer case...yhany6yv_632fdf2fbb37154e4342a387139295418c5556fd.jpg

I will be doing this. It's perfect for the trails in Ouray. There is some really steep descents with tight turns. I also would use it backing up the camper

Anyone do this on an 09-10? I know the ECU changed from 08-09 so I'm guessing they are probably different plugs there. Appreciate any help anyone has to offer!

So, where did you get that switch? Inquiring minds need to know....

The switch came from www.otrattw.com. The script on it was not something they already had. But when I called to order, I told them what I was doing and they were very happy to make one for me.

And it was still pretty cheap too. Something like $17, I think.

Nice. I was looking at their switches a little while ago...forgot they did custom stuff. Nice job on that install.
