2X4 to 4X4 conversion

I am not sure where to post this exactly. I have a 98 Pre-Runner that I would like to convert to a 4X4. Is this possible? I have a transmission problem and need to replace the transmission. Can I get a comparable 4X4 Tacoma or ForeRunner and transfer the suspension and transmission? If it can, what model years should I look for? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Not impossible, recommended by some, flamed by others...regardless, if you have the tools and persistence, it can be done.

 

If you decide to do this make sure you save the VIN from the Donor Vehicle makes ordering parts for the 4x4 much easier.
