3.4 pcv replacement

afternoon folks. Wondering if you can tell me where her the pcv valve hose on your 3.4 has this fitting on it and if it’s important.

I’m replacing the pcv tomorrow and can’t seem to find the part or the part number on any of the diagrams but the stealership sells the hose and the pcv/bushing.

I just replaced mine a couple months back. It did not have that piece on it. I got mine from camelback Toyota.

Mine don't have that either. Broke my old,one pulling it out. Damaged the gromet putting the new one in . I need a new grommit. The piece in the photo may just have been some one plugging off one side of a Tee to join 2 pieces of hose if a long enough piece was not available. I've done it before

How does the pcv get fixed to the engine? Screw in, torque?

 

Friction fit in the grommet .

These grommets due tend to get brittle with age and should be replaced

 

Just wondering what made you want to replace the PVC valve? Were there any symptoms? And, after you replaced it, did those symptoms disappear?

 

I'm taking this one on today. There's oily dirty crud around my PCV, so I'm assuming the old grommet is seeping. Going with the trio in case the hose splits taking it off. Wish me luck!

I could see the oil and grime leaking past the old grommet and decided it was time to do something about it. I've never touched the PCV before.

Had a little trouble getting the old crusty grommet out, but eventually got it out in a few pieces. 1/2" drill bit came in handy here. (not attached to a drill, just the bit used by hand to bite into the fossilized rubber.

I went ahead and put the new hose on as well. It didn't really need it, but the old hose was as hard as a stone, and I already had the new one in hand.

Yep. I'd check the condition of the grommet though. My grommet was toast even though the valve was still functional. It's a cheap and easy PM.

 

in responce to Jamesboy2233 question of what does the PCV valve do... it is an emission control device. PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation. In the old days there was a road draft tube which was literately a tube that came out of the engine and vented the blow by gases to the atmosphere, they are recycled now.

 

The grommet was seeping oil onto the valve cover. I was having some idle issues as well but couldn’t confirm they were related. Replaced everything along with some hoses that looked toast. Don’t know if it “fixed” anything but I don’t think it hurt the truck or my wallet either.

 

I have a question...there is a grommet a valve and a hose...is at the end of this hose where I should add a 1/3 of a seafoam can if I want to clean the top of the engine? I wonder if I can try it when replacing the valve?

 

Parnado, that's a great question. I've been researching vacuum line intake cleaning for wife's Subaru, and there are plenty of suggestions, none of which is through the PCV. One thing that came up a few times is diagnosing bad PCV valve, and what it does if the engine is cold. To this point, I'd think if the engine is warm, it should run fine at high idle if the hose is disconnected. ...whether this engine needs intake cleaning this way is another question. Unless I'm wrong about the intake, Toyota uses dual injection, with port and DI, so fuel already passes over the intake valves. ....but why not give a cleaning to everything anyway? I might do just that with my 3.4 since it has 325,000 miles on it.

 

I know that I'm replying to a 5 year old post here. But if I remember correctly the PCV valve is a one way valve, meaning it allows air to flow from the crankcase out, but will close the valve if the pressure reverses. Because of that I don't think you'd want to spray Seafoam in the hose, the weight of the liquid would likely shut the valve, and I don't know if the pressure in the crankcase would be enough to open the valve back up.
