So pinging or sounds happen when you’re half sure. Low RPMs and floor it or half throttle in a slightly low RPM.all this happens at 14.8. But if you learn your truck where you know where’s the power >2500 RPMs no hill) you can just floor it from 14.8 to 12.0 in a flash. Otherwise, it’s essentially a normal Tacoma unless you down shift and floor it. If you’re in manual tranny it gets a little getting used to. The auto should be be stepped on enough to cause a down shift I imagine.

Are the injectors clean? Maybe a couple cans of sea foam? That seems to help me out.

I went through this exact scenario last year. After some troubleshooting I figured out it was because the ECU is in closed loop and fighting to maintain ~14.7. I used my OBD reader to show me when the ECU would switch from closed to open loop and saw that it remains in closed loop pretty much all the time even WOT. I installed the AEM FIC 6 piggyback which allows you to control specific closed loop sections of the fuel map and add more fuel. The 7th injector enrichment module doesn't provide that kind of granularity.

Then once I dialed in my fuel and ignition maps, I started messing around with my methanol spray timings and amounts while pulling back the fuel in certain areas of the map to get the AFRs exactly where I want them.

Could be. 1997 runs a 2.0 pulley with meth and his numbers are 11.5 WOT. I would check for exhaust leak. It’s cold out right now where we are. You may just be able to see it if you look underneath.

533EF75C-AC82-4A28-A550-916574F7BBE7.jpg This was my muffler which was split open/rusted out. I didn’t have an AFR at the time but felt like something was off. As soon as I replaced it. It was very noticeable and the exhaust was cooler, like my exhaust tip stopped being super hot and black. Basically started running right.

I'm running a 2.1" pulley and have the AFRs dialed the same. Back then @1997tacomav6 was helping me troubleshoot my issue at the time and he saw my video of my WOT pull and AFRs staying at ~14.7 before I realized what the issue was. His truck does go into open loop on WOT and with addition of the methanol spray, he's able to dial in the AFRs that way.

But not all trucks behave that way, as I've learned in regards to open/closed loop. I also have an automatic like @Rldanie and maybe that's the difference. But I can say for a fact that my truck even WOT will stay in closed loop.

If he has the means to, he can test like I did and visually see when the car goes into open loop. Apps like OBD Fusion lets you see when the car is in open or closed loop. If he goes WOT and sees that he's in closed loop, then that pretty much explains it.

That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. I keep forgetting. Every truck is different.

I’m getting methanol Thursday. I’ll see what happens after LOL. Hoping to cool things off and clean up whatever buildup. I’m hitting 7 psi on stock pulley here and there. Hit that today. It’s freezing here.

With mine it'll go into open loop with WOT but if I push it 2/3 throttle and ~4 psi boost, my AFRs will hang out around 14.7 for almost exactly 4 - 5 seconds and then go into the 12s or 11s accordingly. Might be that's when the 7th injector kicks in, I don't know. But that general lag where the ecu struggles to maintain 14.7 is irritating

Yup. Same for me. Maybe the key is to drive normal or drive fast. Be one with the ECU LOL.

I read somewhere that the lag is normal for N/A Tacomas because it's better for mpgs and emissions to keep the AFRs at 14.7 as much as possible. ECU is programmed to maintain closed loop as often as possible before letting it go into open loop. Problem is that it's not ideal for boost, so we have to tune/install piggybacks and fuel mods to compensate for what is otherwise deemed normal operating behavior.

    The checklist is this:
    1- radio off
2-find a nice uphill straight away
    3-down shift
    4-floor it.
    5- cruise
    6-repeat as needed.
7-make sure you got gas in the tank

Lol I gotta say that out here it’s a little different than Cali. In Cali i had a lot of tickets. Those motorcycle cops got me all the time. True story... In CO, I was trying to keep up with wife’s sports car and she made a right into the parking lot. I missed the right because my black 2018 3” lift couldn’t hang. But I went over the grass, sidewalk, planters and drove over the whole parking lot and got pulled over. The cop said “what the hell are you doing man?” I said “I’m trying to go 88 back to the future”. He let me go. It’s literally hard to get a ticket here.

Knock on wood I haven't gotten one in CA in several years. Been pulled over a handful of times but luckily just warnings. But yeah if you get stopped by a bike cop in CA you aren't getting away with a warning. Those guys are only out to dish out tickets

Speaking of CA...I am happy to report that I passed my biennial state STAR smog test on Saturday with flying colors...such a relief. 2 more worry free years lol. Snuck by with the 7th injector again.
