Did you install a new fuel pump?

The automatic because it wants to lug the engine, keep rpms low, gear high is more of a common problem with this combination.

The manual has less issues and each setup seems to be a little different.

I don’t have ping issues in any gears unless less I lug it really hard.
My Supercharger loves the higher rpm range all the way up with no ping.

 

I’m starting to think it might be a better idea to add some enrichment from the 7th injector at 2500rpm instead of retarding the timing. I did some research and learned that the pre-loaded tune does not add fuel until 3000rpm. That explains why the ping goes away with a downshift. My thinking is that adding fuel will gain me more power than retarding the timing will. I’m no expert though.

I did install the new fuel pump that came with the 7th. By using the cruise control, it seemed like I was able to induce ping better than I could with my foot. I guess because it’ll let the engine load up more with the cruise enabled, which makes sense.

If AFR is 14.2 in boost at 4.5 pounds then your running lean and could be the ping along with slight lugging.
Typical I keep my AFR at 11 to 12 in boost

 

So then I suspect adding fuel instead of retarding timing would be what I need to do.

 

Correct, ideally 11.5 in boost is where you want to be at.

The ECU will try and keep the AFR at 14.7 in closed loop which is best fuel economy and emissions,
But not when boosted.

So you need to figure out the programming to fit that.

 

From what I understood, 14.7 is good for closed loop. I figured I was close enough at 14.2. It is not pinging in open loop, at least not that I’ve experienced so far. Although to be honest, I know know where the break over point is from closed to open loop. I am under the impression that it is open if your foot is on the floor and closed if it your foot is anywhere else.

 

No, you need a scanguage to see where the open loop comes on and it can be different from one day to another.
Sometimes my open loop comes on at 3000rpms and another day 4000rpms and depending on what gear I’m in

In boost 14.2 is not ideal in open or closed loop.

 

It seems I still have a lot to learn here. I have the ultragauge instead of the scangauge so I might be out of luck for being about to see that

 

Closed loop AFRs will jump around a bit, are always flickering from 14.2 - 14.8. It's never a steady 14.7

It's kind of irritating at night actually lol. I've gotten used to it though

 

I will say though, back when I got a p0136 code for a bad rear O2 sensor, my closed loop AFRs were averaging more like 14.3 right before my truck threw the code. Not sure but I'm guessing it was related. It didn't really want to go any higher than 14.3

 

FIC6 you can set your AFR map to have 11.5 or whatever you want in closed loop
and methonal you can do the same.

In closed loop and open loop with methonal I’m at 11.5 AFR or so

 

Does anyone know of a company making quick change pulleys for our superchargers? I had one on my old frontier that was great, but I'm not finding any offered for tacomas.

 

Not that I know off, it only takes 5 minutes or so to change one out anyways

 

Well, that went well for about 2 days, popped a head gasket on my truck last night and now I'm looking into doing it myself. Anyone know if you need to drill or mill the heads in any way to fit arp head studs in? Also anything I should also do while I'm all the way down there specifically because of boost?

 

oh damn that sucks lol, were there any warning signs leading up to it? High temps, missing coolant etc. I would assume it was already on the brink and the boost just pushed it over.

I don't have experience with that but I know @1997tacomav6 has experience with head gasket replacement while boosted

 

I don't believe there were signs, might have been a slight leak beforehand but I'm not sure, makes me think it had signs when we bought it that might have been covered up or the previous owner just got really lucky.

Either way I'm looking for things that should be done to make it last longer under boost so this doesn't happen again.

 

My head gasket popped at 485,000, that was 480,000 miles ALL boosted.
I don’t think the supercharger had anything to do with the head gasket tho,
Just a Toyota thing
