Most dyno runs out, put the 3.4 around 150 hp to the wheels, where as the 4.0 is 200 to 210. BIG differece in power output. A first gen double cab prerunner weighs about 3500# without the driver, while a second gen, same configuration is 3810#.

That gives about 23# per HP on the first genner, and 18.5 for the second genner. Thats why the second gens have a much faster acceleration, than the first genners. Times I have seen for the first gen double cabs have been 9.5 to 9.8 0-60, while the second gens, same config, have been below 8 secs., and closer to 7.

To add.....Most 3.4's I have seen that were supercharged, only put down about 215 to 225 hp to the wheels. So...I simple deck plate, and exhaust wont get the 3.4 into the same ball park as the 1GR.

Thanks for the info, Chris! This helps. I love the acceleration of the 1GR engine, but I just want it to get there. For what I'm hoping to use it for, I wont need alot of acceleration.

I'm just concerned about reliablity... Makes sure it runs and works the way its supposed to.

    In your opinion. :)

Drag racing, of course... Not as much for long traveled trucks going over the desert.

As long as the timming belt is changed regularly, the 3.4 is a tank of an engine. Also, many times, a vehicle bought from an elderly person can be a poor choice. Service being neglected, etc. An engine is designed to RUN. Being bounced off the limiter now and then doesnt hurt it. I would rather have a well maintaned vehicle with higher milage, than one with low miles driven short distances......and sketchy maint records.

Also, get one with the stock intake and such. No telling how often the filter was cleaned, or what kinda dirt has been ingested into the engine.

Good point! Never thought about the slow pokes driving the vehicle. Like my truck, we get the oil changed every 10-15k miles (synthetic) and has 86k miles and more than half are interstate miles.
So basically start from scratch......? Ill look

Those "CAI"'s can let alot of dirt into an engine. They dont filter well. Not a big deal for a few thousand miles, but you leave one on for a long time, and it could be bad. Just My oppinion....

we never said anything about sketchy maintenance records, just the fact that they may not have all the records, of course you judge by the vehicle's performance on your test drive though, and by doing a little poking around pre purchase.

I didn't mean for it to sound like you should buy a tacoma that has never had an oil change, but I personally would rather have a truck that needs a little tune up, rather than finding out it's got a bent frame and needs a new front end because the guy's been jumping it with stock suspension. (the guy states in the comments that the suspension is stock)

I can see that. Well 71k miles on that eBay truck.. and who knows how long the CAI has been on, exactly.

Bigger engine means less work for the same power = longer engine life.

And anyone who thinks the 3.4 is as fast as the 4.0 hasn't stepped hard enough on the pedal of the 4.0. They aren't as fast at all.

ughh, no one said they are as fast, but they are both trucks, neither one is "fast" by any means, but from MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE driving both, I wouldn't say the 4.0 is a beast compared to the 3.4.

this has really intrigued me to see what kinda hp I have.. I'm gona stop by the dyno tomorrow and see how much it costs for a run.

The 4.0 builds speed far faster.

    Oh and...

    Fucking knew it.
