People say the 3.5L is noticeably sluggish compared to the 4.0L, but if somone like me coming from a 2.7L, is there a big difference in performance or should I just keep the reliable slow 2.7L?

I have both. At first the V6 feels sluggish and I even compared its power to the 2.7, but after 1k miles it actually feel pretty nice. I can definitely notice the power. 2.7 is bulletproof tho.

After 300k miles, my 2.7L auto is still getting 25.3 mpg. My new V6 4x4 gets about 21mpg. I do enjoy driving the V6 more, but the 2.7 gets the nod when I need to save some $$.

I drove a 2015 with the 2.7 and it felt fast if you put your foot to the floor, like in most vehicles... but the 3.5 is faster than that at middle RPMs.

The 3.5 is fine. Go test drive one or two

2.7 while bullet proof is a dog. It's slow and when I had a double cab with it I was getting 15.5 miles per gallon driving like a grandma.

    Get the 3.5.

I have a 2.7 and going to own a 3.5 2016 on Tuesday. 2.7 is fine for acceleration and keeping it at 70mph on the highway. HOWEVER, on the steep grades, even with downshifting, 65MPH is the best mine can do.

    3.5 is a great motor.

Neither compares to the 4.0 or the 5.7 Toyota motors, but those are not part of the current discussion.

my 08 had the 2.7. The 3.5 is sluggish if you are in granny mode but will move out if and when required.

True dat. The 2.7 in a DC would be even more dog. It was and still is dog slow in my regular cab, but damn she has over 300k miles and still give me 25mpg. I love her

...^^^... Have had both and either will do you well ... fuel consumption on both are about the same ... :burnrubber:

PS ... Best Toyota engine that I have ever had was the 22-R 4 cylinder.

The 3.5 is fine, it's enough power, but it's not fast. You need to bring it up in the revs to make it move. I would, however, opt for a 5.7 at the drop of a hat. It's a shame a V8 isn't an option. I'd take it over a diesel.

You're right, the 3.5 is far superior to the 4.slow in every way

Of course, but lets be honest, how much worse would a 5.7 be? Couple MPG maybe?

I could be completely wrong, partly wrong, not wrong etc. but after a couple months on this forum it is very apparent that some of our new 3 gens are having a lot of issues, i.e. Rattling, squeaks, groans, hoods that flop and buckle, low fluid levels, un greased u joints, weird shifting, leaks, and the list goes on. There hasn't seemed to be a break down on these issues if it's been mostly and or only the V-6's vs the 2.7. Now I have the 2.7 aka to some a "dog" but my dog takes its walks on the road and not to the dealership every other week. My previous truck was A 2011 Nissan DC, 4x4, Pro-4X, which is their version of TRD OR. Good truck in every way with the exception of only getting 16 mpg no matter what I did. Now my new SR5, AC, 4x4, 2.7 "Dog" gets in the 20's all the time. I hope Toyota corrects all the problems many are having as I know we've all spent good money on these rigs. Well wishes and good luck to all of us.
