I guess on the bright side is you don't actually need frame drain plugs to be intact. May as well leave them open

One can never have too many light bars.
My rear diff oil looked terrible at 30K. T Case and front diff oil looked brand new. Not sure if it was due to the diff breaking in, water getting into the cooler (had a milky look)or a low quality oil being used. I swapped it with just standard synthetic gear oil (i think redline once and Mobil 1 a few other times) every 30k now and it looks like brand new oil every time it comes out. I now swap the T case and front diff every 60k now and that oil still looked brand new when it came out.

I have brake fluid flushed every other year when I get my annual oil change by an indie. $200.00 for brakes and $300.00 for syn oil change. Clutch feels better after change, and I feel better after oil change. My body is happier too. 2013 manual Carerra.

For what that costs at a real mechanic, no thanks.

    I don’t have a mechanic.

even if I did and they charged half of what this dude is being quoted at the dealer, I’d still consider it a huge ripoff. I am of the opinion though that only the absolute most incapable wrenchers can not handle fluid changes. Pretty much anyone with a few basic tools and knowledge should be able to do it just fine and can save a bunch of money.

A real mechanic charges fair prices and actually cares about your car/truck.... the kind of guy you go over his house and crack a beer with... the problem is finding him. My mechanic died last year in a motorcycle accident. RIP Ray... gonna miss you buddy.

It doesn't actually benefit dealers to rip people off or do bad service. Especially the way Toyota Hawkeyes them. Believe it or not, you will get good service at a dealer. You will also run into the aforementioned problems of service writers trying to sell you $1,300 worth of stuff that you don't need.

Thing is, so-called real mechanics also have to pay for software and licensing and to keep their shops open and to keep the lights on. So they are also going to have to upsell you something at some point and they are also going to charge you more than what it would cost to do yourself. You're paying for all of their tools and experience and equipment and convenience.

To each their own of course.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. I have a busy life throughout the week but the weekend I don’t mind squeezing in maintenance. I have not found that mechanic for myself and really it’s to the point where I have so many tools and enough know-how that it would be a complete waste of money for me to seek that mechanic out. So until something physically inhibits me from working on my truck, I will do so and I’ll recommend others to do the same.

All I can really say in this thread is no one should pay a dealer $1100 for those 5 simple fluid changes and he doesn’t really need any of them besides motor oil although they aren’t a bad idea to change, but at that price they are a stupid idea. Hence my suggestion to do it himself or if he’s lucky find someone like your guy. Most won’t find that guy, they’ll go to the local garage and get one of the techs there and they’ll still pay too much and get a questionable service done by someone that likely doesn’t really give a shit about each vehicle that comes through.

You can use 5w30 no problem, the Mexico taco manual says it can be used instead with no side effects for the same temperature range. Even says 10w40 is ok if you dont see temps above 0*c. Might help with that quart consumption, thats kind of alot.

Yes, I will agree with you on that. Independent shops have to invest in equipment to fix all brands, while the dealer only needs to specialize in Toyota. Dealership will have the most current TSBs, etc. And, they see a lot more of your kind of car than an independent does, and so more likely to have encountered your particular problem before.

On the other hand, I have a friend who owns a speed shop, specializing in the Dodge/Mopar vehicles. They were really excited to hire a technician from the local Dodge dealership, but he didn't last long because even though he had gone to all the highly specialized Dodge training, when it came to basic troubleshooting or mechanical skills, he was lacking. He wasn't able to think or act like a mechanic. He only knew what Dodge taught him.

So it's a double-edged sword. If you have a puzzling problem with your vehicle that requires some tricky diagnosis, the dealership might have all the tools but not the mechanical acumen. The independent might have the mechanical skills, but not the tools or experience with the platform to give it his best effort.

Your dealership must suck. Left half of our garage could honestly give mensa a run for their money.

Sheesh. Can't comment on your area due to hammerphobia lol but.... Sheesh.

We've got a 2 bay detail garage with a 4 man rotating schedule, car wash, dedicated lube bay, 2 additional lube racks, dedicated PDS/PDI rack, Master Diagnostic Tech, 3 Master Techs, 2 Expert Techs, Tech Apprentice (Certified), 2 Maintenance Techs, and 3 Lube bay cronies.

And we're one of the smaller dealers in our region. :anonymous:

I did all but the brake fluid 30k. I used Redline and Amsoil lube, And it cost me $100.

Man up and do it yourself. I'm 60+ years old with a failing heart(EF at 20%), and I do my own maintenance. I'd bet you can handle it.

If money is the only requirement for making the DIY decision for fluid changes, I'd have a shop do mine every time. Why? My time is valuable, and even though I have all of the tools and the environment to make fluid changes a snap, paying someone else to do the job saves me time and money.

I’m assuming you must drop the truck off and have someone (wife or similar) to cart you back home while you wait? For me, driving to a shop and waiting on them to change the fluid for me does not save me any time at all. It’s the same reason I don’t utilize free dealer oil changes (in addition to the fact that I don’t trust them to touch my truck).

Everyone values their time differently. I value mine less than others clearly, but even if I didn’t, I don’t see how going to the shop saves me any time. Frustration, maybe.

Nope, my shop is right across the street from the trail network where I run; I drop it off, go for a 10-mile run, come back and the work is done.

Walnut Creek Toyota gets a great review from me simply because they managed to do a steering rack swap out on my 5th Gen 4Runner without actually removing and disconnecting the engine like the Toyota manual recommended, they just winched the engine up about an inch or two so they could slide the rack out and saved me a shit ton of money on labor costs. They also actually listened about hand tightening my lugs because I have Spidertrax and I didn’t want them to stretch the studs.
