my truck has 25K now on it. I want to be sure to take the best care of it plan on having it for the long haul. i have hard time trusting stealership when it comes to maintenance.

Any ways what do you guys recommend at 30 K service. dealer said change plugs and bunch of other little things they can charge $80 to $100 hr for. I was under the impression plugs last quite bit longer than that.

    Thanks

    Brock

Here is what I do every 30k
    Spark Plugs

    Rear/Front/Xfer case gear oil

    Engine Air Filter
    Cabin Air Filter

and of course the normal 5K service,

OP, attached is the maintenance log for a '11 Tacoma (jump to page 41). You should have this in your glove box, but guessing you didn't look there yet.

Easy reading, broken out every 5k miles, just use the search function if you want to know how to do any of these as there are a lot of write-ups.

The 5.4 Three Valve trition motor only requires a special tool if the spark plug breaks in half. Its a goofy looking plug that's made in two different pieces and pressed together.

Sometimes, and by sometimes I mean almost always a stealership will remove the heads and tap them out.

Autolite (who makes Motorcraft) makes a one piece plug to fix this problem.

Went in to Wilsonville, OR Toyota this morning to get a quote on the 30k maintenance and he said to me $489 after inputting a few things into his calculator. My eyes got wide and I told him I'd call him back later..

I ended up calling around to a few other Toyota dealerships local and got quotes from $280 - $380 at max with them all telling me it depends on what the truck needs as it may not need all the items on the maintenance list replaced. Finally I called Wilsonville Toyota back and asked to talk to the manager and told him my story and he said at max I'll be looking at $380. Wilsonville Toyota currently has a 25% discount on the 30k maintenance until 9/30. Going in tomorrow morning to see what all it needs.

Thanks to this forum for giving me the idea of calling around other dealerships and getting quotes and also checking dealership websites for coupons. Saved me $200 and possibly more we'll see tomorrow morning.

    For my 30K maintenance I:
    -Changed spark Plugs
-Changed front and rear diff. fluids
    -Changed Manual Trans. oil
    -Changed xfercase fluid
    -Changed oil/filter
    -Changed air filter
    -greased driveshafts

All this is easy for anyone, even for non- mechanically inclined people. Have a buddy help you. Get spark plugs at Toyota dealer and most other stuff is available at Napa/autozone/etc. Plus now you know what to do at your 60k service:D

Manager at the dealership said that in either 2011 or 2012, Toyota recommended changing the plugs every 90k miles rather than 30k miles in 2010 and older? Do you remember about how much you spent in buying everything needed to do the maintenance yourself? I don't have any tools or a place to work on the truck otherwise I'd do it myself.

Sounds to me like a trip to the dealership for your 30K service makes the most sense given your circumstances.

Dealer told you 90k? that's not right. I did my 30k maint. and my plugs were already gapped out to about .050, so every 30-35k is correct if you are using oem Denso plugs. The plugs cost about 4 bucks a piece. I used Mobil 1 75-90LS gear oil for the xfercase and front/rear differentials. You need almost 3 qts for the rear diff and almost 2 each for the xfercase and front diff if I remember correctly. Roughly speaking, you'd prob. spend 140$ in oils including engine oil and filter too. Factor in some extra cash if you have a manual transmission and use the Redline MT-90 when changing out oil. Theres some good write ups on here on how to change out fluids and do spark plugs changes. Its not hard at all.
