So I am looking to re-gear my truck here real soon and I would like to get larger tires at the same time. Truck is a 2000 2.7 4x4 5spd I currently have 3.91 gears with 31x10.5 tires. I've been researching and PM'ing some people on here for about the last 6 weeks in deciding what to do. I was set on going to 32x11.50 w/4.56 gears, but I am now considering 33x12.50 w/4.88's. I am looking for anyone's input on either of these setups like fitment issues, rpm's at highway speeds, etc. especially if you have or are running a set up similar to this already. Thanks for the info.

33x12.5 require more trimming then say 33x10.50, but look a little meaner. 12.50 are harder on wheel bearings, with 4.88s on 32s your gonna be turning over all kinds of rpms. Do you have any lift or anything done to the truck like bumpers or extra weight?

Thanks for the input. I have icons w TC ucas now and just a 1/2" block in the back. No added weight yet. Would like to do bumpers later on. If I go 32s I definitely won't go to 4.88.

I had 33/1250 on another Tacoma ten years back. I had 882s with a 1" body lift. It cleared pretty easily just rubbed the frame a bit. I don't want to a BL on this one. Last one had the 3.4L in it as well

I think the subject has been discussed in detail on several other threads. Probably why you are not getting many hits on this. I dont have aftermarket gears so i dont have any info to contribute.

Makes sense. I've read through a shit load of threads on here, TTORA, and yotatech, most of which were from 5-10 years ago so I just though I'd see if anyone had recently done either of these sets ups to get their feedback

Going with 33's along with your drivetrain package, you'll do fine with 4.88's. Should be in the 2,700 rpm's range @ 70mph.

If going with aftermarket wheels, keep your backspacing close to 3.5".

This will give your UCA clearance from the tire and should keep you from doing the pinch weld mod.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the input. The wheels I have now are 3.75 BS so I was planning on sticky w those either way for sure. Sounds like they should work well

Just an added note, if you haven't installed the Tundra brake up-grade, purchase wheels that will accept it going forward.

    Good luck.

Thanks again. After researching some more I'm going to go with the 4.56 and 32's set up with a Truetrac in the rear. Once it's done ill try to add it to this thread in case anyone else that researching later finds it helpful.

    Change of plans

    I got a deal on a barely used rear 3rd w 4.88s so I'm going with that and 33s.
Just finished the rear install a couple days ago and received the new matching front today. Hopefully I'll get that installed in a couple days and then it'll be time for tires!

Also put in some Icon 3 leaf aal's w new ubolts while I had it apart

Excellent news. You will be very happy with that configuration.

My concern is with the AAL. I too purchased the kit and the AAL sucked big time. Not trying to burst your bubble but... the AAL sagged quickly after install and I broke the entire spring pack while off road. It simply didn't work for what I do off road.

If its not too late, save the cash and go with the Deaver 8 pack leafs. They rock.

Good luck with your build and I hope this helps you.

Definitely. thanks for the input. That's actually my plan longer term. I got the aal used on the forum here to use just for now. But I really would like to get a set of Deaver J59 leafs at some point. My stock springs are alreDy pretty worn at 170k so their pretty toasted.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it.

I worked on getting the front diff out last night but my manual hubs are on there pretty solid... So I found a few tricks online to get them off today so hopefully I'll get it all off tonight after work and hopefully start getting it all back together as well.

Are you having trouble getting the cone washers to release?

Yeah exactly. Suckers are stuck on there. I was reading about hitting ends of the the studs with a brass rod and hammer then chiseling them off.

    You have other ideas?

Brass rod and hammer, couple good whacks straight on the stud. no chisel. You can reuse the washers.

Finished getting the front end apart this morning. Got everything back together with the new diff this afternoon. Definitely went back together a lot easier than it came apart. About 1/4 of the time if that. Just need to get my new brake lines installed/bled then do some clearancing for the 33s and I'll be ready to rock

I have a 98 Tacoma regular cab 2.7. I just installed 4.88's a couple months ago. 33x10.5 tires. The combo is great. You won't be cruising around 80 (well you probably could but fuel mileage would greatly suffer) but cruises around 70 all day long. Your speedo will be off about 7 or 8 mph as well. Make sure you break in the NEW front diff. Drive for 10-15 minutes at a time. Let it cool completely. Do this 3 or 4 times. Leave the hubs locked. Change diff oil after 500 miles.
