I am puting on a toytec 3in lift this coming week on my 97 tacoma and was told by many people i could fit 33/12.5/15 toyo M/T under with no problems. but reading around i am finding out that 12.5 will rub on the frame... is this true?

depends completely on the wheels and backspacing.

Go with the 10.50s instead of 12.50s. I'm getting no rubbing at all, lock-to-lock, with about 2" (or less) lift from Bilstein 5100s. Besides, IMO the 10.50 is better for traction in pretty much all situations for the Tacoma than the 12.50 (spreads the weight too much - less pressure/sq inch on the ground). Not only that, but the 10.50 weighs less and has less rotating weight, which helps on gas mileage and power (I'm running a 2.7L). I see no benefit at all to going with 12.50s, except for looks, if you like wide tires. Personally, I like the taller look of the narrower tire.

I've got a friend with 33x13.50 Toyos on a 3" fabtech with a 2" body lift. They're FAT!! the 12.50's will with with just a 3" lift and minor trimming

Yea man the 33/12.5/15 are wide as hell, they look sick but im sure with just some trimming you should clear. my buddy is running 35/12.5/15 on his 1 gen with only a 3" lift and fiberglass. he had to do some trimming but they clear now.

Back in the day when I installed lots of lifts on 1st gen trucks....

The rule of thumb to fit 33x12.50s was 3" suspension lift and 2" body lift.

    thanks everyone for the feedback.
when you say "trimming" what exactly would need to be trimmed if i did end up going with the 12.5? i like the wider look but i know narrow cuts through stuff better. tough decision. oh and they will be mounted on 15x8 wheels

For 12.50s you will have to do the "pinch-weld mod" (search it on this forum) and, depending on the backspacing on your rims, you may have to trim part of the front body-to-frame mounts (or was it the radiator mount?). Even so, you'll still probably get some rubbing up in the front fender well during compression while off-roading.

You'll end up with extra wear on your rack&pinion, poor gas mileage, poor tire wear (particularly on the front), power loss, and extra wheel bearing wear, on top of the extra expense of more suspension lift and problematic body lifts. Research the 2" body lift before you make your decision.

For off-roading, you will be better off, traction-wise, with the 10.50s IMO.
