Stock gearing 2nd gen. Spec u bolt ons/intake/cam gears/tune. Noticeable reduction of power from a stop due to additional tire diameter and contact patch. With the correct manipulation of the shifter you can get some good usable rpm range when cruising. 60mph / 4th gear = 2000rpm. I average 16-18mpg. I will probably regear 5.29 to run 37's.

i ran 265/75/16 and recently bumped to 285/70/17, run a commercial cap + full 3/4"drawers, so probably 400 lbs of constant load

really pay attention to tire/wheel weight. I have stock gearing, but I run p-rated tires and make sure to run reasonably lightweight wheels. A set of 10 ply can easily be 10+ lbs of additional weight over a p-rated, and it makes a huge difference.

What is the lightest skinny 33? I tried going that route last month but everything was on back order. Ended up with 285 s. I like my new set but hard on gas.

With lighter tires, your truck accelerates much faster, experiences less suspension wear, and gets better fuel economy. Typically, a skinner tire will be lighter in the same model of tire. Skinnier tires cut through snow better, and are more sure footed in rain. Less good in mud and sand.
I'm running some 215/85/r16's Destination X/T's, and the truck feels awesome, especially when compared to the stock size BFG KO's I have on steel rims. The truck feels "dead" with them on; sluggish and noisy.
I think my wheels and tires combined are 55lbs or so.
Depending on who you talk to, a pound of unsprung weight is equal to 2-5 pounds of sprung weight.
Lighter is almost always better, unless you're doing some HC offroad.

I went with the toyo open country AT3s in 235/85/ 16 e rated at 44 lbs per tire. I like the size but the tires are a little less than impressive in rainy and snowy conditions.

I ran into the same issue of weather when I had the Open country AT2s, 265/70/17. Terrible on hilly starts when the road was any kind of wet, but they were great during snow storms when driving on the highway or backroads heading home.

    Are those 35s?
How do you like those wheels?
It kills me that you cant get them in black anymore. I'm afraid the dark gunmetel would not look good with my magnetic gray tacoma, but seeing your truck maybe the titanium Gold would look good.

And it may well be. However, with the added reciprocating mass, and alot of guys run steel bumpers, etc the 4:30s would really shine. I have a new Harrop locker in the box, just waiting for a fresh set of gears.

braking for sure worsened with bigger tires for me,
but I viewed that as more to being equipped stock with underpowered brakes to begin with,

that really should probably be upgraded to larger T4R calipers and Tundra master cyl

given that older passenger cars with smaller engines and lighter weight came with bigger brakes than what a stock Tacoma has. Which is used sometimes to go off road, down a mountain, possibly braking to stop. Where if you can't stop, you go off the side of the mountain. Challenges a car never really has to face.

Tall skinnies also usually only come in 10-ply load E range, which is heavy as fuck...

I don't know if tall skinnies air down better. You start with a narrow width. It can only widen so far with less air. As opposed to airing down a 285/70R17 (vs 255/80R17) you already start with a wider contact patch to begin with
They do seem common though. Any serious off road vehicles like old and military Land Rover models, Australian LandCruiser ute, etc. seem to come more with tall skinnies...

That weight thing is pretty interesting. Even if TRD Rock Warriors are lighter, they are super hard to find.
What is available, is Method 701 I think. I'd say that's my favorite wheel design ever. On top of that, comes in different colors and has bead grip technology. I'd probably pair it with something like Falken WildPeak AT3W.

Only problem is this is probably not the lightest wheel or tire out there.

Makes sense. Currently running a steel rear that is one of the lighter versions, but I could feel the heaviness of the sliders when bolting them on. And only plan to add more weight (front bumper)

I used to think ARB air locker was good until hearing ZUK/gearinstalls say he is against them (a credible gearing person) but a fan of Harrop, who claims to be better than ARB

seems like a couple lockers to choose from
    Torsen audi style, etc.
they sure make e-locker sound better than air, with less space taken up to rely on just electric switch/wires instead of onboard air compressor

    Method MR701 17 x 8.5 is 31.25lb so a little heavier than I was hoping.
    Break upgrade seems interesting.

This is likely the lightest 16" setup with a 285/75 that isn't a street tire.

SCS F5 at 19lbs and a Goodyear Duratrac at 55lbs (they are aired down to 20lbs which is why the sidewall has some bulge).

Looks like they are sold out on the SCS website and I don't see any other vendors. Where did you buy yours?

DO NOT GO SKINNY if you're anywhere that snows consistently. 255s are only available in M/T, and M/T *SUCK* in snow, they don't clear at all and basically end up as half-ice, half warm-weather-rubber-compound slicks.

EDIT - apparently you can get AT3W in skinny size for 17" wheel, but not for 16". And having to buy new wheels to go with a skinny tire seems silly.

I bough them from SCS. They get shipments every month and they sell out quick. They announce their shipments on their Instagram page. They also have a post in the wheel/tire forum here (search SCS Blem) when they sell any blems and I recently picked up 2 more F5s for my trailer by following that thread.

I did not find any ATs for skinny 33s for 16s. Just MTs and only Falken were in stock.
