Don't go to a Toyota Dealer for aftermarket suspension/gear installs. They won't be willing to tune your truck out of factor specs, chop fenders, perform cab-mount chop, etc. Alot of suspension kits are direct bolt on(minus any trimming or body/frame modifications). You'd be better off either installing yourself or going to a local reputable off road shop. You should be OK with getting 285/70/r17 (roughly a 33inx11in) tire when paired with a 2in-3in lift in the front paired with 1in-2in lift in the rear.

You have a lot of options when it comes to suspension. I have the mindset of buy once, cry once. I'd rather purchase suspension at a high cost up front and have it last me the life of the truck than cheap out and buy Rough County shocks that'll leak on you and need replacing fairly quick.

Eibach and Bilstein are your best option for an affordable and reliable suspension. Get an adjustable coilover option so you can fine tune each side individually and also go up/down in ride height if you desire. You'll also need an aftermarket upper control arm. JBA, Total Chaos, and ICON are the most popular. You DON'T need aftermarket lower control arms.. oem lowers will do just fine.

ICON makes a great 1.5in AAL(add-a-leaf) to give you the lift in the rear. Pair this with a set of Bilstein shocks and you'll be good to go.

I would not go above 33in tires unless you really plan on doing the prep work and maintenance. You'll need a lot of chopping at the fenders and plastics, cab-mount chop or re-locate, re-gear front+rear differentials to 5.29 or 4.88.

You can run certain 33s on our trucks with no lift and no rubbing... 255/85/16s or 255/80/17s. They look great with or without a lift. Because they’re skinnier, they don’t rub even with stock suspension and the stock TRD Off Road wheels (or wheels with similar offset as stock), and they’re also lighter weight than regualr 33s (285s), so they don’t suck as much power or mpgs. If you do lift it and run 255s, you can push them out a little further (get wheels with less offset) so your track is wider.

I run 265 70 17 bfg ko2s with a 3in eibach lift. Love the set up. Ive heard 275 wont rub, but once you go to 285 you need to start cutting.

Just a friendly reminder. It would benefit you if you first drive it stock ,no lift for a few months before lifting it and going bigger tires. That way you get a feel of what Stock tacoma drives . Bigger tires meant slower on take off, shifting issues ( unless you have it KDMaxed or re-geared or both ) . Vibes may be present too. All these may become apparent but your taco looks good. Good news is all these can be remedied .

With high mileage, any “knobby” tire gets louder. They are not loud tires in general. I have geolandar g003s in 285/75r16s now and they aren’t even “loud” to me. Loud compared to duratracs, which are not loud. Just my opinion. I’ve never heard anyone call duratracs loud.

The prime reasons buyers uptake dealer offered stuff like this are

    1) they want to wrap it in their financing. It's only a few dollars a month more that way, right?

    2) they buy the warranty sales stichk.

    3) they have no clue what's being installed, that's its budget parts at a premium price (see #1)

Y’know, this might be the most profound thought on TW this month. Like, if you don’t know what the truck drives like stock, you’ll have no point of comparison. Kinda genius in a way.

Get 35's, a 6" drop bracket lift, +3 long travel kit, hydro bumps, custom leafs, and send it. Screw all that, just get a bed mat.

I agree that should be the case, but the manager at one of the dealerships said they (that dealership) wouldn’t honor the power train, as well as the suspension, etc. I’ve read in other threads people have had the same experience.

I have the stock 3.91 gears in my truck with 33's. I do feel a regear would help, but it isn't unbearable. I do notice it offroad though. Used 4 low way more times on 285 33's than 32's or skinnies.

Depending on where he lives, those sizes might not be available. I wanted to go 255/85/R16 but it was hard to find tires I wanted in that size.

OP, it also depends on the truck you get. I mean the exact truck. My 2018 TRD OR has had more rubbing issues with bigger tires than others have reported. Also, lifts don't really affect the size of tire you can run, if you are routinely utilizing your full suspension travel. Check out this video, it might provide some useful insight for ya.

33s or 37s are the jump that’s worth it pretty much.

Stick to 33s if the dealership is doing the work haha.

Thank you! It looks like I should be thinking more around the 32 or 33 from what many are saying. Do you have any input as to if I could run 255/75/17 (or 265/75/17) with only 2 inch lift?

The lift doesn’t matter. You can fit 255/80r17 with no modifications accept perhaps an alignment.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/put-255-85-16s-on-stock-or-wheels-and-suspension.491079/

The biggest downside is that there are very few tires in that size and most are e-load, so your fuel economy, acceleration, and ride quality are going to suffer noticeably. If you are ok with those trade offs, go for it. I like mine, but I don’t put many miles on my truck since the pandemic started.

Definitely 35s. I'd like the see the end result of what the dealer does to fit 35s, or at what point they give up
