Has anyone got this rear end thud issue resolved? Mine has been doing this very often lately, quite annoying.

This is still a problem? You sure it's not your u-joints?

I noticed it on my truck (manual transmission) recently. I came to a soft stop and it sounded as if I had a load of something in the bed that shifted and hit with a thud. I have already lubed my u-joints and checked the u joints. I need to research 'axel wrap' because I've never heard that term before (truck only has 1,500 miles on it). Other than that, everything seems to be working fine.

    Sub'd.

I've noticed this pretty much since I bought the truck. Best way I've found to avoid this is to ease to a stop; happens mainly when I stop to quickly.I initially thought it was the trans slipping on downshift (if even possible). U-bolts torqued, U-joints lubed, and trans was topped off by the dealership.

This showed up in my 2006 out of warranty. Had to pull the driveshaft apart and grease it every 5000km. I tried many different greases but none were a proper solution.

Glad others are replying to this thread regarding the thud coming to a stop. I thought I was the only one.

I'm almost positive it has to do with our leaf springs aka axle wrap. The previous TSB for this was the 4 leaf pack that affected 2nd gen owners got.

Our 3rd gens only have 3 leafs unfortunately. Imho I think it'll be awhile before they release a TSB on this unless more owners come forward. If you guys are having this issue, make sure to take it to the dealer and get a case opened with Toyota Customer Care prior to the visit

I'm taking mine back in for this pretty soon. I'm pushing for a new driveshaft. It's been pulled apart and lubed twice now. It's better, but still thumps particularly after it's been sitting. Does it in D and R.

I have experienced this a bunch of times on my '16. It really threw me for a loop, just like something was sliding around in the bed and then hitting the tailgate or front of the bed. I notice it most often after I back into my driveway.

Same noise on my truck. Dealership ordered new clamps for the boot and some drives shaft parts. When parts come in (hard to get cause new model) they are going to drop the driveshaft and check to see if it's scarred, if so replace the slip yoke. If not scarred just take apart and lube real good. Toyota should have put a lub zert there to make it easy to service. They called it "slip yoke bump". They have had it on some 4Runners, Land Cruisers and other truck base Toyota's.
Being a Toyota salesperson for over 30 years I have driven a Gen 2 Tacoma for the past 8 years and am very familiar with them. If it were not for low tranny fluid and this thud I would be perfectly satisfied. I'm getting the gas mileage or better that's on the sticker and love the extra power.
All in all I could have gotten a new late 15 but I do like the 16 better even with these annoyances.

So what's the order of business: Bring it to the dealership first and then, while there, ask that a case be opened?

Also, for those with manual transmission, are any of you having a slight 'clunk' when shifting from first to second and possibly from second to third? Not sure if that's normal or indicative of something that needs to be looked at.

This is likely not the issue you are experiencing. But, perhaps it is just a wild thought! I had an old truck that would make a "thud" noise when coming to a stop. It turned out to be the rear drum brake shoe catching a bit.

    whatever it is, it's normal

trucky (taco) does it and Mr Sqweeks (4runner) does it

it ain't wrap, as my 4runner has done this for the past 17 years and you can't wrap that axle there are no leafs
and it has rear control arms, therefore axle cannot twist

    it's characteristic of toyota.

I am told it's from the slip yoke grabbing instead of sliding when the driveshaft needs to compress and expand. If it's bad enough our dealership resolves it. Mine is. Thats the reason they will have a spare driveshaft on hand in case it's scarred.
I do not claim to be a mechanic. Don't need too...we have great mechanics at my dealership.

I'm assuming since you work there - your dealer is more apt to assist you. For the rest of us, I'm wondering how to replicate the issue during a test drive and if it doesn't then we're SOL. Mine doesnt occur all the time but when it does, you definitely know it (pretty big rear ending-type feeling). Thanks for any feedback bud

That's a dealer warranty and not a Toyota warranty, so that makes some sense, outside of a shitty dealership trying to find a way to screw you over.

Actually since I work there I think I get put last in line. I found if I medium accelerated up to a least 40mph and then slowed to a stop, on a smooth road so as be able to hear and feel the thud. I could get it to do it a least a third of the time. Its key that you can show the problem to a mechanic. If they can't sense it how can they diagnose it.
Make them document your compaint, all dealerships are phobic of a lemon law claim. We have never had one at our dealership.

This happens on my truck once every handful of drives. Seems like usually when it's cold and if I'm doing like 30 or 35 mph on a smooth straight flat road, take foot off accelerator as approaching stop sign, slow braking and then THUMP like a very hard downshift clunk. It is strong enough to feel like its pushing my truck forward.

I have an appointment on Monday about this. I'm betting they will either say they cant recreate issue or its normal. Any takers?! Haha
