Of course, the thud stopped over the weekend (It comes and goes as it pleases) so I cancelled my appointment, I really didn't want to sit at dealership for hours for them to tell me they couldn't recreate the issue. Next time it starts doing it, I'm just going straight into dealer without appointment.

Mine is enigmatic too. Usually I notice in the AM when cold.

Same here. I think I noticed this weekend that in rainy conditions it is not present...But that could have just been coincidence. I am really trying to wait until my 5K service but the clunk along with the vibrations make me feel like this thing is a junker. ugh

Mine can be replicated after I have driven about 5 miles and come up to a stop light or sign and brake rather quickly to a stop with one application of the brake peddle. Just like when someone cuts you off short and you have to stop a little quicker than you normally do.

Another one to put on the list it seems. I've noticed this for a while now, and was always hoping it was gas sloshing in the tank or something easy. Usually I notice it before the car has warmed up, most commonly when I'm backing down out of my slanted driveway and brake as I get into the street.

My truck does this alllllll the time, its so funny people say, write it off, "its a truck" "they all do it." I found the TSB on it, its TSB-0016-13 REV1, stats they need to remove the propeller shaft coming out of the transfer case to the front diff then drive the truck and if it remedies the issue then they replace the propeller shaft in between the transfer case and the front diff. If you truck is making the thump then is because the propeller shaft is the wrong size, the TSB only covers up to 2013. I'm taking my truck in this Friday for the 60,000 mile because its still under warranty, I know it sounds dumb but I wish it wasn't I want to do most of this myself.

This is a long time Toyota pu quirk. Mi had the same thud on my 02 Tundra. You guys are describing it to a tee.
A very good friend was the service mgr at my local dealership and he tried unsuccessfully to fix it with zero luck. He said that Toyota was well aware of it but didn't have a clue as to how to fix it.
It seemed like it was better when I would load my zerks up with grease.

They have known about it for years and they aren't going to start fixing it now.

but from what I can tell it doesn't hurt anything just annoying?

Finally had my driveshaft replaced by the dealership. Clunk is still there. Actually it's worse now with the new driveshaft. The old one had been lubed with the Ford/Motorcraft grease. Field rep is supposed to look at it again on Friday. Supposedly Toyota is working on trying to find a fix, but they're not sure if it's coming from the DS or Trans. In my mind it's the DS since when it was lubed it got better, and with the new one it's worse. That's the only variable changed. We'll see what happens, but I'm not exactly hopeful they'll fix it since this has been a long standing issue. My advisor said I'm far from the only one complaining, and that it seems to be more common with the 16's.

It's transmission and temperature related. Pretty sure we all feel it. IMO it's mapping related and will be fixed with a re flash probably.

    nope. imho, nope.

that thud will be there forever. it's in the physical design of the tranny valves
and how 1st is selected and at what pressures and timings that it can occur

it is a combination of the

    transmission brake down to 1st
    when you stop
(this is a valve with o-ring that slides to put you in 1st,
aisin 340 and 750 thump is just how it works sometimes)

and sometimes, add some axle/spring wrap unloading
add sometimes some idle control gibberish
with some a/c clutch action thrown in, in some moments

when you come down to a fast stop the tranny does not brake to 1st
right away, it lets the guts wind down then boop, 1st gear gets pushed in
yes depending on age of fluid, foaming of fluid, temp of fluid..speed of rundown...etc it may not thump at all

1st gear in auto trannies is special, it is the only gear you can physically pick by shifting to 1st,
(other gears require working valve body and solenoids, 1st is mechanical when done with lever afaik)
so when the valve body and computer chooses 1st for you when brake-down, I think the valving
is routed some funny way different than all other gear selections. and there is a sort of 'hydraulic hammer'
that can happen in the valve body

This is pretty much what the service tech explained to me when I brought my truck in to have the tranny fluid checked because I had the same small thud when I came to a stop. It's very subtle and only happens on occasion. He told me 4Runners had this the worst a few years back, but it's always been a Toyota P/U - 4Runner issue.

Did the new driveshaft get Ford grease in the slipjoint?

I don't understand.....but it sounds like you know what you're talking about. So basically, we should just learn to deal with the occasional thud?

    well

all my toyota trucks and 4runners have it since 1998 to 2013

many others here on the forum are familiar with it

it's just what they do...now...does this answer here cover every possible bump or chuggle? hell no but all these
descriptions and worries I see, and filtered through my road-weary eyes, tell me this is the same
thing they all do...not a problem, functions as designed

Nope. Brand new and untouched. That's why I think it's slip yoke related since the grease definitely helped. Now the other shaft is in its back again.

You'd think all slip joints are basically the same.
You ought to see all the different patents the industry has. They are a lot more complicated than what I gave them credit for.
