Well, my 2016 came in last night, and have been driving it ever since, and the engine/tranny problems everyone is complaining about has been FAR exaggerated. It shifts smooth, Cruises just fine, and is a general pleasure to drive. It is better than my 3nd gen in every way, as far as I can tell. (MGM TRDOR DCLB)

People would have complained if Toyota didn't put a 6spd auto in it, cause that's what the "twins" have, and people complain that the tranny shifts too much. What do you expect from a 6spd? I love my 3rd gen, and I was worried after spending 2 long months on this forum waiting for my pickup to come in. Never been happier with a car purchase.

Tall overdrive gears and constant shifting is the trend all automakers are adopting to meet CAFE requirements. That's why the Colorado 6-speed behaves similarly, while the full-size trucks are seeing 8-speed trannys (10-speed in upcoming Raptor). The Toyota tranny is designed to stand up to the higher duty cycle.

Don't like the behavior? Slap the shifter to 5 or 4. Simple enough.

My 2016 is great, the constant shifting took a little while to get used to (I have always had standard transmissions in the past). However, I can't complain when I am getting 21mpg. Now that I am at 1,100 miles I notice much less of it. If you want it to feel more responsive put in in ECT.

Yeap, that is correct. Don't get me wrong guys, I love the truck that is why i bought it, but is just comparing to the 2nd gen it feels it lacks in power or you have to rev it a lot to get it moving, lack of low end torque and the tranny is not helping , but you are right ECT solves the issue. I wish I could leave the ECT on all the time

Not to beat a dead horse, but I think OP was talking about actual owner reviews that have been posted on sites like Edmunds (like an Amazon review).

    Right?

Anyway, I too think the tranny issue is overblown, I think the truck needs to learn you, but more importantly you need to learn your truck. It's true, the truck drives different from the 2nd gen, and IMO, better.

While it is nice to feel power under your accelerator, is it really that necessary for most day to day driving? The transmission the way it is helps to keep me from driving like a pissed of teenager. When I do want to accelerate and burn some gas I hit the ECT. I think it is better as a conscious decision than the default of the truck, and will hopefully prevent any more speeding tickets.

Reviews of the manual transmission are overwhelmingly positive. It actually drives like a truck and not like a minivan.

How much confidence do you have in the reviewer pool? Me, not a lot most times.

It's good to know what folks see as issues. But then you have to figure out if it's a problem for you, or not.

Love my 16, do I think they need to release an update for the tranny? Yes, also I am not very impressed with my mileage since I am getting on avg 15mpg (without ECT on and always nursing the gas) but I did buy a truck so I wasn't expecting to get prius mileage just a little disappointed it is that low. Also she just has a few other quirks (which you can expect with a new model that will most likely be fixed in the near future), have the tripometer random reset issue, the 3500rpm jump for no reason issue. But I can live with these issues, I love my Taco and couldn't be happier driving it everyday! Besides that who gives a shit what other people think, TurdGen4Lfe, Yolo! lol

Most times in those reviews "issues" really means "I don't like".

There are bad reviews for everything, the point was about edmonds. And to what OP was saying... There are SOOOO many bad reviews not just edmonds. There wasnt that with the 2nd gen. I have read just about EVERY 2nd gen review by edmonds, nothing but great remarks until competition starting to get stiffer. Then edmonds starting to be harsher towards tacomas. And rightfully so IMO.

Edmunds, ha! when the hell did any serious truck owner rely on them for unbiased truck reviews. The people over at Edmunds wouldn't know a real truck if one ran their ass over.

Manual trans owners are hypocrites. A REAL truck doesn't need sissy-ass air conditioning, power windows, power brakes, or power steering. Who needs fancy shit like a heater or a radio? Those upholstered seats are for nancy-boys, rip that shit out and bolt in a hard plastic seat. And what's with those sunvisors? Only a bitch would use those when you could just as easily squint. You fucking pussies, why do you need a windshield...

Mine shifts less now than when I first got it. I know a lot of the complaints come from the transmission shifting too often, but I wonder if throttle mapping doesn't play a part as well. This past weekend we were leaving my sisters with the atvs in tow and I forgot to hit the ECT button after starting the truck. We were going down a dirt road and I was maintaining a constant speed and I hit the ECT button and the truck started accelerating. It didn't shift gears, but instead felt like I was giving it more throttle. I had to back out of the throttle to maintain my previous speed. I know ECT changes the shift points of the transmission to hold gears longer, but does it change the throttle mapping? I have always hit the ECT button when I was stopped, so I never noticed that before. Just curious if anyone knows whether ECT changes anything other than shift points.

So that begs the question, what professional would you rely on for an unbiased truck review? I'm not trying to be a jerk here but please don't say your neighbor, boss, dad, brother.....as that doesn't really count.
