I have a 2016 off road and am buying 2020 sport headlights. The "L" style led drl. Pics below for reference.

    s-l400.jpg

Going to be buying a set of 2020 headlights to do the bhlm and swap out the white drl for amber. Can anyone confirm the mounting points across all 3rd gen years are the same? And is the drl led interchangeable across all years? Thanks in advance!!

Id hate to only find out parts or the headlights don't fit after or during this project.

They're all the same. 2016 to 2021 with Halogen projectors and LED DRL are all identical... aside from the Pro lights (Non-LED) that have black internals, but are a like for like swap option.

    Yep.

I have 2020 all-LED lamps on my 2016 and they simply bolted in.

Awesome, exactly what I wanted to confirm. I was 99.99% sure they were. Always comforting when you hear people with first hand experience.

The only caveat here is that you need a custom wiring harness to go from halogen projectors to the OEM LED headlights.

Correct. OP is going halogen to halogen, which is why I didn't mention the harness.

End result, the only difference im wanting is black housing and amber drl.

Im too poor to buy the led headlights.

Jeez. If you're going to the trouble of replacing your lights, at least upgrade them to the OEM 2020 LED units, which are miles ahead of any of the halogen projector units, and, of course, get the requisite wiring harness adapter to do it. You won't regret it.

Wish I could. Couple reasons why I won't. 1. Too expensive. 2. Could be the minority, I don't like the new led headlights aesthetically. 3. I like diy projects. 4. I like knowing that I created things exactly how I want them.

You may look at it as "trouble" i like to think of it as a project. Is it a huge change over stock? Nah, but its all the small details that make it awesome.

While your in there, you might as well do the RX350 upgrade to HID.

Trying to stick to a minimal budget. Otherwise I would have already had the parts waiting in the garage. Who knows may change my mind.

If I'm not mistaken, it looks like you're going to buy a whole new set of halogen lights anyway, right? They're about half the price of the LED's so it ain't that much more in the grand scheme, and as far as aesthetics go, things tend to start looking a lot better when you see how much better they actually work in the real world. Y'know - something about form following function. You think they look weird because you've never driven with them. Once you have, you'll never want to go back. But to go to all this effort (and some expense) to make a cosmetic change that doesn't improve performance - and more importantly - safety, makes very little sense. Just make sure that whatever you do, you get your lights properly aligned.

Except in the winter, where LEDs do not generate enough heat to melt the snow build up off of themselves.
I purposely went halogens on my Tacoma after coming from a slew of high performance german stuff with awesome looking and performing LED headlights — until I drove rural roads at night during winter where they became a safety hazard as their light output would significantly decrease to the point I would have to stop to clear them off by hand. During daylight, driving in winter traffic, they would accumulate the grime and it would basically look like you were that asshole driving with your lights off.
I don’t get the hate for the halogens. And this is coming from someone who lives and drives on rural roads (in Canada).

There are pros and cons to LEDs. Let the OP do what he wants without hassling his choices.

As other have mentioned, they are the same. I just replaced mine about a month or less ago. I wanted black inside instead of chrome, but still have clear lenses because of local laws. Anyway, I looked at several Youtube videos regarding how to replace headlights on a 3rd generation, and they were right on. It took me about 2.5 hours to do it, but I took my time as I didn't want to screw it up as I am known to do! But I know I could do it again, in about an hour since I have now done it once. It is not hard, with only 3 bolts, but the problem is just getting to the dang things! You have to take off the front grill, then push out on the tabs that hold the fender flare covers, so you can reach the bolt that is on the sides of the headlight housing. just for that one bolt, because of its location, its just a hassle! But, in my case, there was no additional harnesses, as the units I bought were simply plug and play. I will include a link to where I got them on Ebay. They are still out there for only $375 for the pair. Free shipping, although I had to pay tax which brought it to just over $400. Way cheaper than OEM. They are totally worth it and look awesome! Here is a direct link, as well as a pic of the front of my truck with the new headlights. https://www.ebay.com/itm/133378578896?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITTRDnewheadlights20210521a.jpg

You're right, halogen headlights are close in price......if you're buying brand new. Ive got a budget in mind, so I'm buying second hand. My intended budget is low to the point where I mess up this project, I can scrap it without breaking the bank. The goal is not to improve performance, my goal is purely aesthetic, without compromising safety. For my style of driving, the halogen headlights are more than adequate. I trust you when you say the led performance is "better" than the halogen, but like @philth pointed out, they aren't better in all applications. For me personally, I think the halogen headlights are "better" I dont have to drive with the led headlights to know I don't need or like them. It all comes down to personal preference. I don't like the led drl in the led headlights, point blank period.

With all due respect, I appreciate the comments and conversation, alot of what youre saying is based off personal opinions and assumptions. It's all personal preference, mine and yours. I fortunately have the time, have sourced parts within my budget, and am in no rush to speed through this project. So I plan on doing this project my way and the right way. Additionally if all goes well, I'll be able to sell my near perfect old headlights to recoup a majority of my budget.

Thanks for the tips! My anticipated budget was around 400. But at this point I'm on track to be in this after all is said and done, 300 give or take.

My worry is breaking one of the mounting tabs as I've heard alot of people have done. But I've got plenty of time to go slow and take my time. I work from home so it won't be a thing to have the truck sit in the garage inoperable throughout the week.

I'm being honest, did want to read through all the posts, but I have a 2023 trail and want to stay on halogen but just want the corner led strip, are they plug and play?
