Same here.... I'm at 3500 miles and it's getting progressively louder every day. I'm taking it in for the 5K service in a few weeks and will see what they have to say about it... Having done my fair share of re-gears, I'm 98% sure it's just a bad setup/pattern on the gears.

What mileage have u guys changed your differential fluid at? I was going to change mine at 500. Some on here said that is " too early" so I'm doing everything at 1,000.

I'll be using Amsoil 75w90 severe gear.i have a faint whine at 50-55 mph.

I took it to two different dealers. They all claim " fluid is within spec. Test drove another TRDOD which produced the same noise". Their narratives were almost identical like a script. But the other dealer didn't even have me in their system. So I wanted my own test to remain accurate without conflict of intetest....very interesting

Never changed mine. Totally unnecessary to change it.

30K is the normal service interval and while it certainly won't hurt to change it after initial break-in, it's totally unnecessary. In this case, changing the oil early isn't going to prevent the howl--bad gear setup is bad gear setup and no amount of snake oil is going to fix\prevent it.

What other option do I have when Toyota states " normal operation. Test drove another 4x4 TRDOR".

I'd have to pay for a independent shop to confirm the noise.

Find another dealership or, like you said, pay an independent shop for a diagnosis...

I've been to two different Toyota dealerships. Both stated almost identical reports on the service paperwork. Almost like a script.

I did this to avoid conflict of interest. It seems that now they just " cover up" no matter what.

My guess is a memo floating around not to replace anymore rear differentials. Could be wrong though.

Just did my 5k service. Told service adviser about the whine, he mis-heard me and wrote 55mph - 65 mph on the service sheet. I didn't correct him as he said they were busy and if they had time they would take it out for a spin. He noted this is the first he heard of it.

Got done, service adviser told me they took it out and heard the noise, technician initial thought was it is a wind noise. I could schedule back as they were busy and they could start troubleshooting it with 2 technicians. One to drive and the other one to pinpoint the noise.

I told him I wasn't concerned and would have them do it at the 10k service. Hoping that the rumored TSB fix is released before the 10k service. Checked my paperwork, didn't mention that the noise was confirmed, also the noted speeds were corrected (55-60 mph).

All my driving is below or above the range speed. I hear it once a day on a offramp going home.

Had some free time, checked the lot of Tacoma. The DCSB OR all had 1-2 degree shims between the leafsprings and axles. None of the Sports, both SB and LB had them. There wasn't any LB OR to check.

That was the initial theory, but many here who confirmed they have the shim installed from factory and have the howling. I'll have to check mine today (build 3/17) and see if it has shims.

I rotated my tires last Saturday and noticed the howl is now subdued. Almost to the sound levels of my first diff, which is much more manageable.

They rotated my tires at 5.5k service but not at 7k when the diff was replaced. I rotated my tires at 10Kish.

I'll keep and ear on it and see what happens. Might not ever rotate my tires again...

My truck (3-17) has those shims too and I also rotated my tires and the sound is the same.

The shims started popping up in the 17s but I've read on here that they don't have a part number for them..which seems weird.

I think that's more for the rumble strip vibration issue

1/2017 build date for me. No shims. No rumble strip feeling either though, so I'm good.

I have the shims on my OR and the howl. Shims are not the remedy.
