Well crap, folks. Tonight I just notice a literally hideous howling at 46-49 mph. My wife was on the phone with her mom while coming back from dinner and ask me what was wrong with my truck. Prior to the TSB I never had the howling at that speed. In fact, it changed the howling to a narrow speed of 56-58ish. Now I have it in the 46-49 and 56-59 and the lower speed howl is by far several times louder than it ever was. This is starting to tick me off. Love my truck but I have to get back to the dealer. I will not put up with that lower speed howl because it’s too loud. Two more trips and I’m going to stop screwing with this and just LL it. That’s a shame. I’m not mounting my new Ray 10s or Falkens until two more repair attempts and then so long, unless they can fix this last obnoxious noise.

The lower howl at 43-48 showed up for me immediately following the tsb. I didn't have it at all before the tsb. I bet you can "find" a howl in the 20's if you look for it (feathering throttle, slight downhill grade).

I could live with the higher speed howl but the lower howl is straight up loud, to the point where it’s obnoxious. This really makes me sick, resonance or not. Its funny, as my wife and I were leaving the restaurant and talking about which family car to buy next, I told her I planned on keeping my truck for 10-15 years. My how the times just got fickle.

Yeah the lower sound is just a constant drone. Not as loud for me as the chirp at 58 but it's more bothersome. I don't slip in and out of it like the one at 58. I can hear it pretty much throughout the 40's. It's just always there in the background. Even with the radio on.

Do you still have a case open with Corp?

I still have a case open at corporate but I really don’t care about them. I just do it so they can’t claim ignorance and because my time is just as valuable as theirs so I email every executive I can find. If this doesn’t get fixed I will LL and move on and that’s a shame. I’ve been in Tacos for many years and this truck was absolutely what I wanted and still want, but I’m not fooling with this crap much longer. I don’t have time for this level of unnecessary crap. I’m just a bit ticked now and hope I cool off or else I’ll take in it twice next week and then file a complaint the week after. This shouldn’t be happening in 2018.

I hear ya. I've been in Tacoma's for almost 20 years. I'm done after this one, assuming they don't get this howl thing figured out. But I can't at the moment, with a good conscience, sell it to someone else. And I'm not anticipating a solution at this point considering this goes back to 2016. This is so rediculous I don't even know what to think. I can see a company saying "to hell with you" over a lemon microwave oven or blender or a tv. But a $38k truck? When even the dealer says "yeah, this truck is making a funny noise"? And Corp just tells you it's normal. And they can't to anything about it. Absurd.

And apparently I'm asking myself questions on TW now. Par for the course. Woulda been funnier if I answered my own question.

Darn, I thought this issue has been fixed.
Just got a local dealer to agree on a 2018 trd off road with tech package and a few other minor accessories for 34k + tax and lic.

After reading this, I am freaking out.
Or I can get a 2018 tundra crew max limited for 42k+tax+lic but it's huge.

I test drove multiple 2018's off the dealers lots (after purchasing to compare to mine). None had as bad of a diff howl as the one I ended up with (my howl showed up on day 3 of ownership). The dealers all told me mine was a one off. And that mine was an aberration. But lots of reports on TW. It's a crap shoot, no doubt.

I only had the 50s howl as well, but then delveloped the 20's + howl after about 3k miles of the new diff. Hope you guys get a resolution!

Some of them make noise right off the lot, some take time... Hard to say whether to go for a tacoma or not with an issue like this lurking. If Toyota would man up and fix it already, it wouldnt be bad, but they dont seem to be concerned with the responses the dealers and corp are giving.

Don’t buy a Tundra to avoid this. If you happen to get the noise and it bothers you, there are fixes for a LOT less than 8k + tax and a truck’s life of terrible gas mileage.

Changing out the gears is the guaranteed fix @ $1800-$2500.

Interesting! First I’ve heard of that. I guess the only realistic place to go next is experimenting with a single piece driveshaft.

Or someone with a lot of time on their hands could swap rear ends with a 2nd gen to isolate whether it’s the rear diff once and for all.

All of them can howl. The TSB is only for specific models, but all of the diffs can have the howl.

Ok. Thanks. Just hadn’t seen any Pro owners complaining. On a 45-50k truck that would be a deal breaker.

    It's a deal breaker on a $38k truck, too.

I had it in my 17 Pro.
    The TSB fixed it.

My pro howls. It started soon after I purchased the truck. My first attempt to get it fixed got shot down as couldnt replicate the issue. Im a bit apprehensive now that I have heard a few people get a 40 mph drone post TSB.
