I grew up in Wahiawa too, now live town. :( There's plenty of area in Kaena to drive around where you should have no problem with 2wd.

You can always park at the gate and walk in. Just remember to take lots of water and a first aid kit. @BlueLights had to take two people to the gate when one of them fell and couldn't make it back this weekend. "To protect and serve"...even off duty!

If you plan to drive passed the gate, you need permit.

    Email I received from DLNR:
Here is the info regarding the new online 2016 KP Vehicle Access Permit. Please go to this URL – http://sups.ehawaii.gov.

Im wondering what you did with the colorado too. Did you take it off roading on this island and at where? Cause that can determine how "far" you can go with the tacoma…already knowing areas and obstacles, being used to driving off road, etc. Being a good driver is getting to know your vehicle and what it can do. the other factor that will help is knowing if it is 5 or 6 lug. 6lug means its a prerunner and higher than the other 2wd 5lug. ive taken my prerunner to amazing places, but its a v6 auto. I did get a chance to drive my friends 2010 4cyl auto double cab prerunner to some places while he was alive and the truck was here. Since he didnt have a license I drove it around(we hunted a lot) and took it off road places where I took mine. Ofcourse, less power but she handled. Put some new scratches and dents on it before it went back to oahu. if youre a careful driver, you can take it places dont want to take 4wds. Being 2wd, deeper mud, uphill loose dirt/gravel/mud is no go, sand is usually a no go(unless you dont care).
    if youre 5lug 2wd…hah!

Tell you the truth it spent most of its life as a "concrete crawler" . It was not lifted and it had all terrain tires. At lunch i would drive around fort haase beach on kbay, and occasionally drive on my friends private beach in marconi on north shore. I initially got 4wd cuz i was single and just in case i got stationed somewhere that needed 4wd. I never went kaena cuz while my 4wd was op. I dont think they had the permit thing and 4wheelers were getting a bad name. I also mistreated her. When i went to flagship fast lube they told me they could only use royal purple which would be like $600+. I never did the maintenance then my 4wd went out. She ran good 2wd the rest of her life. Plus, none of my friends had 4wd, so i was a tryck loner. I will never get 4wd again unless i can do my own maintenance or get rich. Thanks for your input. Its a 6 lug

Hmm, dont see the correlation of not maintaining it and 4wd going out. People religiously maintain it and things go out. Iirc, its pretty common for those Colorado 4wds to go out. my friend bought a used one and one of the first things he did was cut off the front suspension.

You dont need to be single to have 4wd….4wd can open up many places for your s/o or family to see…but if youre into hiking places then thats cool too.

Honestly just like that you can go many places on oahu and save just alittle bit in gas without that added weight.
Kaena…can go many places when its dry, stay away from the mud and loose stuff. People have rambled stolen cars into there so depending how ballsy you feel, you can go all over the creation(j/k…its marked trails and straying away is condoned).

Check your hood once in a while. If the adhesive isn't squeezing out from the adhesion points, it may not be glued properly. Initially i had three spots seperating and when it got inspected today, it looked like most of the rears and most of the inner supports had separated. Looks like as one lets go it works the others loose too. The service guy helping me was not certain what the body shop would do to fix it or how long it would take. I just hope they get it right the first time so i don't need to keep taking off from work to take care of this.
