Does anyone else get a detonation/diesel sound from their 3rz upon acceleration. I hear it every time a press the gas from a stop, I hear it if I'm in 4H off-road and load the engine. I pulled a Tahoe out of a ditch a few minutes ago and heard it then. I would swear I had a diesel under the hood when I pulled the Tahoe

I don't have a 3rz taco but if its detonating that loud its not normal. I would be looking for a defective EGR valve or plugged one if that engine has one. Detonation or excessive pinging can be also caused by carbon build up in combustion chamber, too much timing, EGR system not working, bad fuel

Should mention this truck has 63k miles on it. Not really enough to plug up anything with carbon

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
63k miles shows a lot of short trips in the vehicles life. its possible to have excessive carbon build up due to the engine running richer for the warm up period

No, it just sat. It was bought from an old guy with 43k on it. He didn't drive much. The lady I got it from her daughter drove it as a DD till she went to college. I've looked in the combustion chamber. I can still read the marks on the top of the pistons

Damn you lucked out how much did you pay? I got mine last Friday with 134k on it and that was the lowest one I could find even the Toyota dealers would have them with 118k

It's at initial acceleration. Once I get above 1000rpm it goes away

I have the exact situation with my '02 Tacoma 3rz , just recently started making the same noises as you've described only on takeoff from a dead stop. No noises when at idle or cruising speed? Mine sat & was only run briefly on the weekends to keep things warmed up through last winter. Any updates on what it may be ? Thanks

No updates but I find it interesting you have a 2.7 auto as well. How many miles?

Nope. OP said screw it, pissed away a bunch of money on the truck, slapped a supercharger on it, had to run 91 octane from them on, and never heard the noise again after doing so.

OP spent way too much money on the truck and then sold it. Now he regrets buying a Ford.

    Don't be like OP.
