The actuator only need to pull not push. The force on the latch is enough to put the actuator back at resting state.

So options right now as I see it. 1 wire (Unlock) from harness back to tailgate at least. The other one could be chassis grounded. But will likely end up having two wires back to tailgate. 1 Unlock (+) and 1 grounded at the harness.

Dumb question from someone that hasn't even bought his taco yet...
Are the various signals captured from the door lock computer (in response to key fob buttons) not provided on a CAN interface or something like that?

I've been waiting to take care of the unlock/lock mod.....so with the upgrade to plug & play and no drill bracket and now this! You'll have to market as the "Tailgate Premium Package"! Seriously, awesome work and thanks for making cool stuff for us. Whatever you wind up calling it, I'd like to grab a complete package! (Maybe complete kit would be a better wording! :D)Thanks again Bill

@KTJO 4x4 and @DSIM thank you both for the inspiration to get up and do the drop-gate mod!
Since a pull on the latch assembly was only required, I used a trunk release solenoid.
Used relays to make sure 12v+ was strong and to lock out the system when driving (ign on).
When in rest state, 3 unlock pushes at the door switch will also drop the gate.
For sure not as clean of an install your kit will provide, but I had the solenoid and just had to tap/fuse a few wires and program the TR-7.

    Big thanks again!

What type of features are you thinking?

Added ign on lock out that is all.

I get in/out of my bed a lot while the truck is locked and every time I take the fob out to unlock the tail gate(I have a DIY pop-n-lock) I think about how convenient a "touch to drop" would be.
By this I mean a touch sensor on the tailgate handle that would drop the gate without fully "unlocking" it. I could get in, load my stuff, then close the tail gate and the truck would be locked just as it was before.(and without ever searching through my pockets for the fob). Could use a solenoid like zero mentioned instead of a actuator since it only requires a 1 direction pull. And I am pretty sure it can be popped open even if the handle itself is in the locked state. The biggest obstacle would be making the handle have a proximity(like the drivers door) so not just anyone could walk up and touch it to open.

I ordered a door handle to pull apart. Hoping to have it next week. Want to see if it is easy to disassemble and piece into the tailgate somewhere. Would be awesome.

Nice! I hadn't thought of a ssolenoid. Wouldmake mounting easier. It's difficult to mount an actuator in just the right position.

Glad I could inspire you :oldglory:

I'd really like to get a dash momentary button installed for this as well. Just would need to figure out how to lock it out while not in park.

Not really Without alot of hacking. The light green coil(see pic) is wrapped around a captive sensor which you touch on the backside. The lock is the 2 metal tabs on the top.
In my case I’m more worried about just dropping the tailgate without a fob.. so it would essentially be isolated from the pop-n-lock, and from the truck itself. I think a universal touch sensor mounted up inside the handle to activate the solenoid would be the easiest. Like this

    Smart handle

But still at the part of only letting it drop if near proximity

Is it all one board? Or is there a separate piece that is the responder to the key fob. Just really need that then a universal touch sensor could work.

I am able to drop the gate with 3x press on the door panel switch. Have it wired so the solenoid will not activate when ignition is in "run" (used Bosch type relay to open circuit (12v+) when ign is on)

Ya the PCB is a satellite. Might be able to wire in your own sensor to activate it, would just need to test that there’s no weird resistance values the board is looking for. Having a touch to lock wouldn’t be a bad idea. Wonder if stock proximity works that far back.. I haven’t checked.

I used those a few times when in the car audio field. Activate pop up screens, turn on speaker LEDS, etc. the material it’s mounted behind has to be really thin for proper reading.. but works good once it’s all setup

Good point. Something I need to test, like if you hit unlock 3 times to let a passenger in or something. Hadn't considered that.

Highly doubtful prox works that far back. But never tested lol. Touch to lock AND touch to unlock would be the bees knees. And to top it off a wave of the foot to open the tailgate.

That board have a part number?

Thank you sir. Saved me some digging.
