Just wondering what the forum thoughts are on the 4.0 liter v 6 used in the second gen
tacoma's. in stock trim. Any issues to watch out for ...

So if you have any positives or negatives in term of feedback please chime in.

General consensus seems to be headgaskets on the 05-06, on the 12 the air pump on 13-15 had different tuning for that part, frame rust regardless of year, and leafpacks going flat there is a tsb replacement pack for it, for 4wd the needle bearing in the front diff, also the lcas like to seize on all years as well.

I thought it was 12-15 that had a different tune, in part due to the air pump but also with a much more conservative fuel table? Am I remembering wrong?

You’re correct 12-15 has a different tune then 05-11 due to the pump, however the 12 had some growing pains with the new addition subsequently 13-15 has a different operating procedure with the air pump.

Interesting. I thought the problem with the 12 was limited to the filter disintegration. :fistbump:

What is lcas ? And what filter is disintegrating? would that be part of the air pump (anti pollution control ?)

Couldn't agree more. Only a mere 215k miles on my '09 and she still runs like new. Keep the oil changed, tires rotated regularly, and keep on drivin.

I’ve got over 300k miles on my 06. I’m about to fix it up and give it to my son when he turns 16, to hopefully drive another couple hundred thousand miles!

Just rolled over 200K on my 2008 - no real engine issues.

Only engine related stuff I've had:
    • Thermometer housing cracked (due to age), around 195K.
    • Timing chain cover weeping oil very slowly - requires engine-out to replace. No gasket, not under pressure, common quirk for 4.0s. I've had this for 50K+ miles and watched the oil levels - I've never seen the oil levels drop noticeably between oil changes. I call it my "anti-rust deployment system," haha.
...aaaaaand that's it. Just change your oil, filters, sparks, belt regularly on time, and you're golden. I'm getting to the point where I need to look at replacing rubber hoses due to age, imagine that.

    It's a fine engine!

My 05 at 200k miles does the same thing, and has been weeping oil at the valve cover gasket slowly for years without issue. No drop in oil.

Only consistent issue I've had is with the center support bearing(AKA: carrier bearing). Have had 3 go bad. Toyota covered the replacement cost twice, but I had to cover the last one. Cheap part, but requires removing the drive shaft to replace. It also tends to damage the drive shaft when it goes out.

Clearly you don't know about the IEDLS carrier bearing replacement for these trucks.

I have dealt with carrier bearings on older chevy c 10's of yore . Some models had solid 1 piece shafts and others had 2 piece with the stupid bearing.
even in the same length bed models go figure.

Ok well I ordered the 1" filter for the mod from Amazon. So when it comes in I will swap it out. Video shows it is easy to do.

I'm only at 81K miles so it might still be in decent shape. crossed fingers now.
