I was very close to doing this about 5 years ago. It would have happened except the Raptor model, color and options pack I wanted was sitting there with a sold sticker.

Not sure how much HP you are willing to buy. Never dynoed my truck, 2010 DCLB Prerunner. Stock the mpg was pretty sad, and the power seemed flat.

Yes, I have a hood scoop, but no stickers to go fast.

The current setup is much better but no drag queen. Volant cold air scoop into a DIY duct into the oem airbox with Volant oem replacement filter. I did blend and smooth the edges of the airbox and throttle body. The throttle body was also polished. I stuffed an intake manifold spacer in, added a URD Maf black box. Exhaust was swapped to DTLT headers, URD y pipe, followed by the stock exhaust rear section and stock muffler. With no cats, I installed the URD o2 sims. The rear axle got a Tru Trac diff.

As I mentioned, it is no drag queen, but certainly runs better and the Scangage shows the mpg while driving. Stock was 20 on a great day, now, with no effort, 24/25 mpg at the same speeds with the same tires.

For the earlier trucks there was an aftermarket setup available with cam gears and more. Apparently Toyota swapped the design of the engine computer connectors making it very difficult to plug and play unless you go boosted.

I have not stayed current on what is now the best mods for newer trucks. I will say though that if I had gone supercharger, those bearing would be replaced well before the known worn out times others had.

If this going in the 08 X runner, get the cam gears and kit that goes with it. The early version seemed popular and got good results, no doubt the later version is better.

A while back I belonged to the x runner website. There is a lot of good solid info there.

Point is he's gonna be disappointed if he thinks simple bolt-ons will net him any satisfactory gains.

Don't forget that adding an almighty hood scoop with get you at least 50hp, maybe 60 with a proper tune.

I guess you mean mileage. Not sure what me league is.

I have kept fuel burn / mileage data from day one. Truck was bought new 12/31/2009. MPG is trended up about 10% without the cats and having the other mods.

FWIW, those highway mpg shown on the scangage actually beat the 10% average mpg. So around town, 10% on the highway closer to 15%, maybe more.

Sorry, I am not all techno about tracking mpg, just watch fuel burned for trends or changes. Never bothered to setup the scangage to do all that stuff.

You just have to divide miles driven by how many gallons you put in (always full tank obviously). Your way is very inaccurate and I think you will be surprised how much lower actual mileage you are getting.

The mods you did did absolutely nothing to help your mpg

Inaccurate, I laugh, as you try to school me on this, the fuel log since 2009 has every drop of fuel added, with 99% being fuel topped off the same way each time, with odo miles and trip log miles recorded.

Since I have the Excel spreadsheet I setup for another vehicle, maybe I need to put the Tacoma in there and see.

You do not need to be a genious to see the miles traveled vs fuel burned, and when traveling on a highway road trip, to see the scangage showing current mpg it gives a pretty good idea of how far a tank will get you.

For comparison, how do you log your fuel mpg and have you made any mods to the truck to help or hinder the mpg number. I know one thing, BFG Mud Terrains are expensive to roll compared to other tires, but work good in sand.

Only drivetrain mods I've done to my 2009 AC TRD Sport so far are the TRD exhaust, intake, URD clutch/flywheel, and URD MAF with the map for my setup - thinking this is as far as I will go. Butt dyno tells me midrange has more grunt, more responsive off the line, but this truck will probably never see real dyno testing (I had a 2005 G35 coupe with 360+ at the rear wheels, which did get dyno'ed). Highway MPG has increased, but the truck sounds so good that I ruin my city mpg because I'm having fun with it. Very happy with what these mods have done to my truck.
Worth the cash? Completely subjective, but I can't leave any of my toys alone...

How in the hell did this turn in to an MPG war? This thread was asking about HP. MPG is not gained through boost or ls swap. Looks like the xls and its doubters are high jacking the sh#t out of this.

Back to topic, Boost the hell out of it while you build a motor. A wise man on the forum had a sticker that said: "HP is like good sex, you can never get enough!!"
