I usually have the dealer do my oil to save time, and it was only a couple bucks more than buying all the stuff to do it myself.. Not anymore. I found out that instead of using a tube on the oil filter plug, they stick an empty quart under the nipple and let it drain out into it. Want to know how I found out? They left it there. It fell. My fan shredded it. Oil everywhere.

I'll be doing it myself from now on.

Sounds like a real mess they made but look at the bright side... at least you know they actually changed the filter!
You'll enjoy doing it yourself and knowing it's done right. Get the 5/16" inside diameter hose and use a hose clamp to permantly install it on the filter drain. I use a plastic plug to cap it off at the other end between oil changes...works great!!:)

Great tip about the tubing! I have been using a coffee can, but you know it's only a matter of time before it slips out of my hand!

Quick question ... The oil filter drain plug that you attach the 5/16" hose to .. do you have to turn that plug to loosen it, and that is what allows the filter to drain or is it just an already open drain and that nipple is for easy connection to a hose?

I am preparing for my first oil change in my '11 Taco .. I have been doing the oil on my '95 Taco since '99, so I am sure this will be MUCH easier then that. Thanks

As recommended here previously, I use a 16oz empty water bottle, I shove it in and then dump it in the oil drain pan when done.

Or use a 5/16 hose, and run it to the oil pan......

    Guys .
The plug is just a rubber push on cap. There is a little mushroom on the end of the stem that keeps the cap from sliding/falling off. Just pull on it.
Since the filter is already upside down it's pretty much empth when not powered up. Drain the pan, pull the plug, slip a plastic coke bottle over the plug , & remove the filter. There will not be much oil in it. During all this leave the motor's drain plug off.
After everything is back together , I always stick a magnet on both the motor's plug & the side of the oil filter's body to help catch any possible metal pieces floting around. It couldn't hurt.

Just changed my oil for the first time. What a change from my Cobra. Didn't spill one drop. I love this truck more and more.

Went ahead and put on the fumoto; its hard to believe the oil change could get any easier.

I don't know if this question has been answered, but it's not simple.

The cap wrench that I wound up with is 73mm 14 flat I believe. That fit the Toyota filter I put on. The filter I took off was some offbrand T3614 or something and this wrench did NOT fit it. It seems everyone has a different number of flats and diameter. The FRAM filter number is 3614, and the first wrench I bought said it would work on the FRAM, but it didn't work on the other brand 3614. So, if you buy a cap wrench, plan on using one type of filter only.

I pulled the drain plug first, then the filter. I had no oil drip out of the filter into the catch basin thingy. Gatorade bottle got no love. I also did not have a cap on the nipple. Whatever the quick change places use to "torque stripe" the plug all along the edge is some tough stuff. I had a heck of a time breaking it loose with a 3/8" ratchet.

Just confirmed 73mm 14 flat is what fit the Toyota filter.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Quick question for Chris or anyone who knows. It is a question that I am pretty confident I know, but just need to make sure.

I have recently switched to Mobil 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic, I have about 2 quarts of Mobil 1 (regular) Full Synthetic; is it okay to mix the two in the same oil change?

I assume it is no problem, probably same stuff with just an additive to the high mileage so mixing will dilute the additive, but just wanted to make sure before I did anything like Krazy.
