New Tundra comes with 4.6 or 5.7 V8. Not sure what's in the current 4runner, but the 4th gen 4runner was 4.7. They are different engines, the 4.6 is supposed to be the better MPG engine for the Tundra.

385 lb-ft of torque and 200hp from a 2.8L engine that gets close to 30mpg. Why are we not all driving this engine?

Yeah, I forgot there was a 4.6 for the Tundra. Just figured the 4.7 would be a better/more logical fit since it's in the 4runners. BTW the new 4runners don't have a v-8 option anymore, guess they weren't popular enough.

Don't know much about the Colorado, but the 5.3 Vortec is the same as the fullsize Chevy and I know of several with 100-200K on them with minimal issues.

The five Dodge Dakotas that my family has had over the last 15 years have been very good to us. Yeah, they are not perfect, but my Taco hasn't been either. Never had to walk because a Dodge broke down. We've also had Jeeps, and those are a different story. I can count four tows between three Grand Cherokees with under 100K on them. The newer 4.7 Dodge doesn't feel much stronger than my 4.0, a little more low end, but I don't think my dad's quad cab 4x4 would outrun my Taco. Now, the old 93 Dakota with 4x4 and 318 V8 would put the Taco to shame.

When my 08 4.0 6spd was new 16.5, after about 5000 miles 70% HWY driving keeping it at 60 MPH 17.8. Now with the lift & 265/75/16's on a road trip at 65-70 I got 17.5. I think the tire size adds some mpg (thats fake MPG). But I will say this with the stock tires I installed the undercover lost at least 1 MPG. I don't get it my brother told me it's normal.

I used to drive first gen tundra'a at work. They got 12-14 mpg average. The second gen taco is not much smaller than that and you're gonna tell me it will take me up to 20+ mpg?!? You'll get worse gas mileage, worse tire wear because of the extra weight, worse handling again from weight, even less engine compartment space, but you'll gain 20-30 extra HP and some sound... Toyota is thinking smart. They are not going to put an engine in a truck that so few are going to buy. Oh forgot one, they'd have to redesign the frame because the early second gens were cracking from a v6... and you want more weight and power?

We're talking about the 4.6 V8 here bub. Not the 4.7 V8 that was in the 1st gen tundras/sequoias and 4th gen 4runners.

Meh. If I was going to go through the hassle of a motor swap I would put a real motor in it, like this little feller mated up to a TH400. Why even bother with heavy yoda motors. $ for HP and weight nothing beats an LS. [IMG]

Not sure how he's doing that our 2010 tundra trd gets 14.9 towing, fast, slow, mountains or flat ground. Doesn't matter where or how you drive it it gets 14.9

my dads tundra with the 5.7 gets 16-18mpg. The 4.6 and 5.7 are much better motors then the old 4.7. That 4.7 wasn't that great of a motor. The 1gr is better. Thats exactly why toyota stopped making the s/c for the 4.7 because it couldn't take the additional boost in power.

Personally I'd rather see the implementation of a 6 spd Automatic transmission than a V-8 engine into the Tacoma.

I don't think that the dakota v8 or colorodo v8 come with 4x4 I have only seen them in two wheel drive.

That is what I use to avg with my 1GEN 4WD tundras too Ben, the same as my v6 tacoma 4wd now.

    yes to the magic OP.
Would love to see the 4.6 V8 option in the tacoma.
Since owning both tundras 4wd V8s 4.7 & my current v6 4wd 4.0 tacoma the extra oomph for towing would be appreciated. That is what I would buy it for seeing how I do not need the bigger footprint of the now current designed tundra.
Hmm maybe will go test driving today.

Sent an email to Toyota corporate asking if there are future plans to add a diesel engine to the Tacoma, the reply was:

"Thanks for inquiring about future Toyota products. At this time there is no plans in the future to add a diesel engine to the Tacoma lineup"

I'm in the boat with others. If I need a V-8, I'll move up to a full size. I'd rather they add more fuel efficiency to the Tacoma.

its all about the sound... I was on the free way last night in traffic, and right when I changed lanes a mustang behind me with no cats and probably a flowmaster absolutly stomped on it at the EXACT same time I hit the gas... While under a bridge.... And lemmie tell ya how AWESOME it was because I totally thought it was my truck that sounded badass... Trust me.. Tacoma with a V8... Im down.
