I drive a Fedex truck at work that is a Dodge Sprinter body with a Mercedes 5cyl. diesel mated to a 5spd. auto trans. In my opinion this would be perfect for the tacoma. This truck has 279,000 problem free miles and gets excellent fuel mileage.Anyone that tells you a diesel cant be quick needs to drive one of these!!!

There's no "magic" in getting raped at the pump just for the overcompensation of a big loud POS v8. I will stick with my 4 cyl thank you. Get a full size truck if you really need that much HP, most people that buy a Tacoma will not opt for a v8 anyways so it probably will never happen!!

I think a perfect example was the previous body 4Runner. The 4.7 was offered as an option. The majority of buyers opted for the 6 cyl which led Toyota to dump the option from the current 4 Runner lineup. The statistics show that a mjority of compact/mid size pick up truck buyers prefer economy over power; that's why Dodge, GM and Ford are leaving the segment all together. They've done their research if you need more power move up to a full size.

Cummins FTW. Too bad even that 4bt is too heavy for a tacoma

I like how you talk in generalities and definitive statements. "it isn't needed" "there is plenty of power..." Actually, I don't like it, I am annoyed and I think you are stupid.

Now that we have that out of the way, need for power is relative. If you are upgrading from something slower, the V6 may feel powerful, but if you are used to a lot more power, a V8 and its extra torque is very desirable.

    Ta ta,

I would rather see a v8 in the tacoma than the 4runner! When I go out of town camping I would rather pull with a v8 tacoma and not a v6. Its a genius idea to make it an option for us guys who pull trailers and would like a little more pullin power.

And HELL NO I will never own a ford chevy or dodge to pull with. If it can't be done with a tacoma it wont be done by me.

It could be because both the Colorado and Dakota are a joke. I'm sure a Nissan Frontier V8 or Tacoma V8 would be pretty popular.

I see the previous gen 4Runner V8 all the time.

I love my V6, but a V8 option would sell.

It WOULD SELL, to a small Niche market, Toyota aims to Please the majority not the minority. from a business standpoint, if you can make a product that appeals to the masses, why cater to the minority?? makes no sense financially. With gasoline prices going nowhere but up, most people wont want a v8 in a midsize truck.

I would def buy a 4.6! The 5.7 is IMO too much for these trucks. The HP gain would be about 75 which would be nearly too much. The 5.7 gain over the 4.0 would be 145HP. That's more than a Corolla engine puts out!

I had a 97 Dakota with a 5.2 V8 5spd and it was great. The Tacoma has more power and gets better milage and goes faster BUT, If I could get the 4.6, I would. So I'll just beat the hell out of this 4.0 I have until I can get a V8!

Also I like the sound from a V8 way more!

Some kind of new flex fuel thing? What kinda MPG/ horsepower gain you get from high sodium tomato juice? I'm gonna go put a can in my neighbour's Dakota and see what he says.

wow, all this crap about an extra 20 hp? really? the v8 in the 4runner only produced 260 vs the 236 in the tacoma. I'll take the v6 with better gas mileage. Thanks.

yup next mod is going to be a set of dd's.

but on a serious note, i really would buy a v8 tacoma, but mostly because i just could. im not at a point in my life where i care too much about functionality or gas mileage. i already get around 15 mpg in normal use with a v6... how much would a v8 really hurt me there? not much i say.

if you own a V8 you dont care about fuel consumption, at least I dont, the power takes care of that missconception. I would not however have a V8 for a daily driver but that '69 Chevelle in my garage sure lets me relieve some stress when I mash my foot to the floor and it goes fishtailing down the road with smoke puffing and the roar of 500HP deafing the yuppies shitting there pants cause they have no sense of what real power is HOO RAH I love my Tacoma but its nice to bang a four speed and burn some rubber once in a while

My 8000+ lifted 2500HD duramax gets far better mileage than my 4000 lb tacoma. Go figure. sundaydrive9_1524939dfd8a28132a25a616b119638bb0feb5d3.jpg

4.6 would be nice, but the truck would need new differentials. The e-locker rear diff can barely stand up to the 4.0 as it is.

Other than that, it would be nice.

This thread is chock full of the usual ignorance.

The people arguing that a turbo-diesel is what the Taco really needs have their heads on the straightest. A 4-cyl T-diesel making about 150hp and 300 to 325 or so torque would be perfect...

    Hey, look at that!
