Nope... had to work last Friday and she was out with friends all weekend.
That was 4 trips to/from work and nothing more.

Never expected the thread to take off as big as it did. It's great though and everyone has been really cool to one another. Realize I can't hang with some of the others who do real well, but for what I have and what I've done, I'm still above 20 (I'd say 22 all time average) and lovin' it. Modded the crap out of the truck and it still sips gas compared to the Blazer I was driving before this.

I'm having fun getting back into this thead. I like to drive in general. Aimless driving. I want to rack up the miles on this truck over time, like 500K...or 1,000,000!?!?!?

This is one of most civil threads in the forum. Folks will help you squeeze out an extra MPG or two or help you set up your signature tag.

The great thing about optimizing your fuel consumption: doesn't matter how your truck is configured or what you are hauling. Given a configuration or setup, you can calculate your FE and try to achieve your personal best. Trading off an mpg or two for a desired mod is a personal choice. Nobody's business but your own. I have personal bests and targets for all my vehicles; when I drive one or the other, I take the challenge. Some are better than others on FE, but I like them all for what I use them for. I'm sure many others see things similarly.

So enjoy the ride, enjoy the FE challenge, and drive! I hope you make your goal of 500K!

Thankfully the skeptics mostly ignore this thread.

It's all about striving to learn and improve my technique here, and help anyone wanting to learn.

When I started looking for a Tacoma, I wanted to find a used double cab Prerunner with the 2.7L. Like searching for a great white buffalo here in the Northeast - Rare to impossible. I wondered about the economy and practicality of the 4 cylinder double cab - with the numbers you are posting, the economy piece appears to be a clear winner!!

A great post in a real nice topic. Wait till gas goes up to $5+ and more nice people will join in, and be an asset to this thread.

Rep for Quaker for getting us started.

Thanks Dan! When shopping for my Tacoma a few months back when gas prices were even higher than they are now, I was amazed that finding a 2.7L was more difficult than I thought (under $15K and 75K miles). I had even broaden the search to a 250 mile radius. As gas prices go up, a 4 cylinder vehicle will be priced higher than a similar V6 powered vehicle.

And folks will drive smarter...or have to pay more.

The conventional wisdom that 4x4 is a no-brainer because it holds its value and if you even need it once it paid for itself is not always true.

A few years back when gas got into the $4.00+ range I did a rather crude comparison of new prices vs used prices on tacomas and found that 4x4 held there value the worst.

Pre-runners were actually selling for more than 4x4 at the time I looked, and I4 5-lugs had less depreciation as well.

I made a few assumptions like everyone paid near invoice new and that kbb.com is accurate on 3 year old trucks with 50k.

Did a fillup today. 516.9 miles - 19.027 gallons = 27.2 MPG Another good tank. Just can't crack 28. But my goal and expectations were for 25 MPG average when I bought the truck.

Feel free to check out the MPG numbers on my GF's new Mazda CX-5 SUV. Listed on the left side of the page when you click on my Fuelly signature. Good MPG's and Zoom-Zoom, I'm loving it.
    Happy Motoring to all :burnrubber:

I haven't had any 500 mile tanks in a while either. I just don't get to drive on the highway much anymore...:(

Glad you found a willing dealer. I spoke with one of the local dealers here and they told me I'd have to travel to Maryland to order one since they wouldn't bring one up for me. So began my search for the great white buffalo. My only concern initially was whether or not the I4 would be enough power with the larger cab, but driving my I4 extra cab with the family, it does well enough. Seeing your posted numbers, I see that the MPGs would be in a place I'd be rather happy.

    285 (313) at the 1/4 mark.

Really, really want that 4. Ever so elusive.

Curious Ryan, have your MPGs gone up and down with the build ups and downs?

The fuel flowing through the pump cools and lubes the pump, not the fuel around the pump. Until you run out of gas the pump is happy.

But yes... it's a 21.1 gallon tank, somewhere around 1/2 to 1/4 gallon is not usable.
Figure you've got a 20 gallon tank and you're safe.
Low fuel light comes on at 17 gallons on my truck, so I've got a solid 70 miles before empty.

The "extra" wiggle room given by the 21.1 capacity tank and the fuel light that pops on around 17 gallons used is a part of why I went ahead and started the thread.

I didn't want to make folks burn up their fuel pumps.

Can run the truck down to the light and still have 3 gallons of gas to keep to the pump cool.

Chevy trucks were pretty notorious for running them close to low and burning up fuel pumps.

If I get the 4 on this tank, it will be by the skin of my teeth. Haven't been driving as much. Been redoing the wheels and rotating the spare around to the wheel I'm currently working on. Glad I got my spare, but I don't have highway travel confidence in it....it's used...

330/331....numbers I'm much more used to.

I've always been the 360-380 range on my MPGS it seems.

Acceleration with the 30s is rough, city driving is fucking annoying. I can't imagine the 33's. It's not to the point where I feel the truck is seriously lacking power though.

My 2.7L air pump is like a fat kid trying to run a race.
