I have added a brake controller to my base 2.7 5 speed 2wd. It was not that easy, but not that hard. Just follow the directions for adding a tow package to a V6 on this forum. Note that Toyota parts has a diagram that says the plug and play option for a V6 is also on our 4 cylinder - that is NOT true.

Get the regular flat 4 t connector for the drivers side tail light, then add the rest of the wires from the battery on back. Mounting the brake controller in the cab with a 5 speed is the harder part. There is not a convenient spot to put it. I ended up putting it in the little change drawer on the left side of steering wheel. I don't hit my leg, but it is close.

Because of all the salt used here in the winter, I rigged an extra long set of wires and keep the entire bargeman 7 pin plug in my drivers side bed storage pocket. I just had to enlarge one of the holes for the wires to fit. When I tow, I put a towel on the tailgate and put the wires over the tailgate and close the cap hatch. Fits fine. And I NEVER have to worry about salt corrosion on the plug. Salt corrosion plagues everyone who keeps their plug on the bumper. That problem is fixed forever.

And not for the purists, we tow from the bumper!! Everything from a 1100 pound popup, to a trailer and boat of 3200 total pounds. The 5 speed works fine. We have a couple of such trucks that tow here. Too bad that Toyota doesn't make a base 2wd 5 speed anymore.

Holy shit, I never realized it was this difficult for a group of adults to figure out how to move 3500lbs or less down the road...it's common sense.

My 2016 4 cylinder 4x4 5 speed pulled 3 loads of firewood just fine!!! About 15 miles back to my place up and down hills and on the flat! The manual helps a ton when it comes to slowing it down! Let the haters hate!!!:turtleride::lalala:

This was before I installed my firestone ride rite air bags so it squatted a little bit distributed the load out on the trailer so there wasn't too much tongue weight!
