Wow...so much mis-information in this thread.

Read the card for the proper procedures.

No where does it say to stop then put it in nuetral.

The proper procedure is to put it in nuetral first then come to a stop...just as the manual says.

"Read the card for the proper procedures."

I don't think any car maker would ever advise you to take a car out of gear, while it was still moving. Anyway, here is the card, and it does say to STOP, then put into N... (as I have always done)....

This is the card in the visor... note line #5, Automatic Transmission... ;)

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Make sure your wheels are straight, no brakes or any bind to the wheels, if you drive a manual put the tranny in neutral, push clutch all the way to the floor and put switch in, make sure light stops blinking before you release clutch. With an auto just do the same thing with the tranny in neutral.

I couldn't figure out why my stick tacoma wouldn't engage in 2lo. I didn't think to try the clutch. I couldn't find the manual transmission steps in the book.

    Thanks

However if you want it to actually shift and not beep at you...put it in nuetral then roll to a stop. Maybe Toyota never actually tried to procedure they wrote on the card, lol

Funny thing is in 6 years of owning my truck 4 low had failed me only once when I bought the truck.
And I am in 4low every time I work on my truck,
Also almost every time I do the same thing
    1. roll and put in 4hi
    2. once 4hi is locked
3 I either fully stop > drop in N and let it roll a little > stop and drop into 4L
OR roll drop into N > then start stopping and drop into 4L
I am rarely fully stopped when 4L is engaging but I am always in N.
I know what manual says but I fail to see how gears will be aligned in 4500 lb truck sitting on top of it.
Plus I have bad habit of rolling from my 1gen and LC.

EDIT: Bottom line as much as NwiTACO post my sound crazy it has validity to it.

I had seen too many people who tried engaging 4l While standing still and pressing brake pedal for dear life. Those TCases are made to be moving while shifting but not under the load. Example is manual. Its says right there you can engage while moving as long as clutch is in.
My understanding is that Auto needs to be in N because thats the only position computer can read and transmission is not under the load.

Now we know why Toyota removed manually operated Tcase. With so much trouble using turn knob, they would have to deal with bended 4L fork in TCases. (often problem in FJ's) :p

Just bought my truck three months ago.i just put it into L4 for the first time ,coasting, standing still, neutral nothing but beep beep beep beep beep apparently you have to use It once in a while.how I fixed it was ,I was coming in pretty hot to my driveway, which has a fairly good incline into apron/sidewalk crossing. The impact seem to jar something free now all of the procedure under the visor works every time..
