I've heard lots of people with 4 cyl say they wish they had the V6, but I've never of anyone having the V6 wishing for the I4. The only exception would maybe be gas prices, but the difference between V6 and I4 @ 20k/year @ $4/gal is only $666 which isn't very much.

You said you have a Cummins something or another. A 4cyl is fine for towing ATV's.

I wish they made the regular cab 4x4 in automatic with a V6, the 4 banger I have is lacking power but still waiting for turbo

Voted for the 2.7. Question was what do I NEED.
You need an engine, 2.7 is the base.
I have the 4.0L v-6 and it has GREAT power but is not a necessity at all.
In fact it may be more of a liability in the long run. The v-6 is aluminum if I'm not mistaken. No rebuilding in the long run and they are harder to work on yourself.
The 2.7 is mostly derived from Toyota's famous 22RE 4Cyl. As a result, you can rebuild and they are probably a hell of a lot easier to work with.

If you do your own matinence and plan on keeping this truck forever then get the 2.7. It will last you longer and will be less expensive. If you've got a boat to pull or want to haul ass I would go with the V-6. You said you've a got a Cummins deisel though so you can use that for big jobs.

Get the 4cyl and save some gas and money while hauling your little guys like an ATV. I know my 6 cyl gets nowhere near the sticker MPG.

If you are not happy with the 2008 2.7 & you can afford it....get the 6cyl then.
I've own a 2.7 since November 2000, it works fine for me. Good Luck, let us know what you do.

Here's some 4-banger love! I luvs my 4. I wanted a regular cab, think that's a pickup the way God intended them to look, not some ginormous SUV with the back sawed off. Naw, just kidding. I realize that different people have different needs. I've got a passenger car for hauling peeps, and a regular cab for good off-road wheel-base and for hauling stuff. The 4 works just fine for my purposes, and they don't make a 6 in the regular cab, although I'd love one if they did. A 4wd regular cab 4.0 would be a real impressive truck IMHO.

have a 08 2.7 acc cab, ive been thinking of trading it and getting an 09 dbl cab, i like the auto for the city and the additional power for atv's, bigger tires, ive also have an 06 cummins so not really towing heavy loads. so , for hunting, city/everyday driving, light towing.

    I had a '99 PreRunner 4 cyl.
No way would I get another Tacoma 4 cyl.
Too slow and MPGs weren't the greatest for a vehicle with such a lack of power. The constant downshifting on highways with small hills was annoying.

What sealed it for me was the kick-assitude of my solid 5 speed. If you're going auto, fair enough, but that t/o bearing problem with the 6-speeds made me wary.

Besides, you've got the cummins man.

If I didn't tow anything and could live with an access cab I would stick with the 4cyl... better on gas... The 6 is great tho dont gt me wrong.. great passing power...

I was going to get the 4 banger but decided on the V6. I'm sure that the 4 banger is a good, solid motor. However, I LOVE the power that my 4.0 has!! I'm not really happy with the auto transmission. It's not too bad but it seems to me that it's programed for better fuel mileage instead of performance (prob. the reason that the auto transmission 4.0 has a higher mileage rating than the standard transmission). Once in a while I wish I had purchased the manual transmission. No regrets though! It's a great truck and, as I said, the 4.0 is an excellent engine. I love the sound it makes when I tromp it!!!

    Cheers.

I say 4 banger all the way. If you have a Cummins already, then if at any time you need power...drive that!

I'd get a smaller engine for practicality and fuel efficiency.

...Unless you're like, totally made of money, then do what you want:).
