4 cyl. All the way since you already have the other truck for your heavy loads. 4 cyl. is still great to haul lighter loads, and for me has plenty of power too, but I have a car with enough power to satisfy me needs in the suMertime :). If you had onle THIS vehicle, I would tell you go for the 6.

i used to be all about the 4 bangers...once i got a 6 i never went back...but then again it all depends on your reasons...i know eventually im going to have to tow stuff and that extra power is nice but it comes with a cost and that is gas mileage

I bought an 2008 access cab 4cyl. This was when gas was almost $4 a gallon and I lived 30mins from work. Going from a 94 s10 Blazer with 200hp to the new tacoma with 150hp was rough. Now I live 5mins from work and gas mileage is not as big a deal I'd love a v6 but I think I'm gonna wait til its ~3yo then upgrade like these other folks are saying to do.

Other than my perception of lack of power I love my truck.

i love the ride in my access 2.7 4x4. i came from a 97 f350 with a diesel and a plow, so this was a big change.

the ride is awesome, it has more than enough skip for daily driving. now it wont snap any necks, or win many races, but it gets awesome mileage, and is a blast to drive.

i debated the 6 as well, but for the added cost, and my usage, i am happy i am with the 4 banger

I wrestled with this same decision when I was buying my Tacoma in 2007. Test drives made the decision for me. The 4 cyl felt just a bit too sluggish for me, no offense to you 4 cyl owners. There are times when I'm calculating my fuel mileage I wish I had gone with the 4 cyl.

Nothing major or fancy. Just stuff to make it work better for me. Running boards, seat covers, BakFlip
4 banger for me. I use it as a work rig, no trailer towing, and I can load up all my saws, gas cans, chokers, chains, Cat parts, boxes of filters, and some firewood on the way home...whatever I need to haul. Just for grins I weighed the pickup empty and then weighed it again with all my stuff...I'm regularly hauling close to 800 pounds and sometimes more.

I work in the woods and most of my driving is on rough dirt roads with a lot of steep grades. The 4 does a fine job. I've never even come close to powering out. On a couple of occasions I've used it to skid logs out of the road and it surprises me just how much it will pull.

If I was towing a boat or an RV on the highway I'd probably want the 6...but for what I do the 4 works just fine. Initial cost and the gas savings add up big time, too.

I preferred my 2009 4 cyl to my 2010 V6. The 4 had to be pushed under load, but the mileage it got was cool. Now I have all the bells and whistles, and the lower mileage is really irritating....If Toyota sold a 4WD 4cyl with an auto, I'd buy it. Even if it cost the same as the six.

    Really? You can't get a 4WD 4cyl auto?

I'd rather have the manual anyway, but I find that very hard to believe.

i didn't know the double cab came with a 4cyl option...i thought that was only for reg cab and access cab....i'd say go 4cyl for a reg cab and go v6 for access or double cab due to the extra weight of the truck

Quite irritating.....The V6 is a beast, it just runs more effortlessly, which is the holy grail to many. I have no problem revving an engine, and using it for what it is capable. Therefore the V6 is fun, but practically speaking, of no value. I put 36000kms a year on my pickup. Thats $1000 more a year in fuel......

yeah i was looking at the v6 on the tacoma and the nissan frontier....they both cost like 5k-10k more than the taco 4x4 reg cab with 4 cyl base model....and when i saw they got about 17mpg average i was like no way...that's what my dad's v8 dodge truck gets....i mean i like power but i get over 22mpg in my 4cyl...that's a big difference...and it's still has plenty of power...a truck isn't a sports car anyways...lol....only reason i would get a v6 is if you planned on doing alot of towing...otherwise i would get the 4cyl

Actually, I would hope to get a lot better than 22mpg with a 4 cyl. I've hit 22mpg with my V6 Access cab 4x4 once or twice. That said, I'd kill to get a 22 or even a 20 right now. My mileage lately has been terrible.

theres no queston go for the V6. you will always want more power... never make yourself regret going with the 4.

Not really, not on the 4X4 anyhow. My scangauge shows approximatly 22 US MPG at a steady 70 mph. Both my 09 and my 2010 get better mileage during city driving than highway. Sounds backwards but these bricks just don't do very well on the highway. At 55 mph though the 4 cyl shows 25 - 26 mpg. Slow right down to 40 and you can see over 30 US MPG! The useless transport canada mileage rating of 30 Imp mpg (35 US) is a pipe dream.
Now lets hear from those who "really get" high 20's at highway speeds:rolleyes::stirthepot:

I like the 4.0L V6 a whole lot. With the larger truck in the 2nd gen., they should have made the old 3.4L V6 the base engine. I miss that engine from my 1st gen. Taco.
