Hey guys, I've bought my first Taco with the crawl feature and would like some ideas of how to use it. I'm old and I've had 4x4 Toyotas forever but I just got a 2018 and I'm looking forward to trying it in different places. My TRD off roads have all had locking rears but how do I use the locking rear with the crawl? Use the crawl by itself and use the locker only for solid trail obstacles? Is there an occasion where I'd use both at the same time? I've read two articles in 4 Wheel and Offroad where they absolutely raved about the crawl feature but they didn't elaborate. Are there different crawl settings for sand, mud, etc? Thanks for any info y'all can send my way. Frank
Ok, got some good info...about ready to hit the dropzone on Ft. Bragg and stick it to see what happens. Appreciate the info. F

So... crawl control you can use with or without the rear e-locker in 4 low. This is cruising control for Offroad! The setting is more or less high to low speed in orientation with the knob!

The feature works well, I’ve played with it a bit but my first real wheeling experience with it was at ATR a few weeks ago! Be prepared for WTF is that noise moment!

It can save you from stuck but don’t bet on it doing everything for you, pick your lines and skinny pedal if need be! And for Pete’s sake don’t turn it on high unless you’ve practice and know what it’s capable of otherwise you may be jumping hills!

There is a thread that goes into pretty good detail: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-traction-control-modes-explained.530695/

Start there, got questions let us know!!

Hahah sorry to disappoint, but no reason to go into too much detail when there is a perfectly good sticky for it!

Full disclosure I don't have crawl control (I have a TRD 1st gen). So take what I say with a grain of salt. My '17 SR5 4Runner has DAC (which I absolutely hate), but no locker or CC.

Crawl control is really just a glorified cruise control for low range 4x4. Honestly, I find myself varying my speed way too much to find something like this a desirable feature, it's kinda like trying to use your cruise control in city driving. When you're in 4-low, you're likely in very rough terrain.

The locker and the Crawl Control are completely independent. You can use either/or, depending on your needs. CC is so you can maintain a contsant speed, the locker is so you can gain extra traction. Sometimes you need both, sometimes you don't need either.

Best thing to do is just play around with them and see what types of terrain or which situations they might work best for you. You sound like you have plenty of 4x4 experience with older model trucks, so I say get out there to places you're familiar with and just dink around with the different features. Find a short section of trail that you're familiar with, and try it without any of the electronic gizmos engaged. Then try the same section with the locker. Then again with just the CC... You get the idea.

The more you drive it and play around with it, the better feel you'll have for when to use them and when you don't need to.
