Great pictures and trip report! What portion of the trip required the permit?

I don't like your group buys. :luvya: haahah

I have to take a few photos this weekend on a side project, will have some proper pics up soon!

I posted this up in another thread- you'll probably want to snag permits for the nicer sections early in the season. I think you can snag a backcountry permit either 3 or 6 months in advance. I had my application pre-printed and faxed it in at midnight, lol.

-Parrasawampitts Point (first night campsite, National Forest/no permit required)
-Point Sublime (second day/lunch stop. GCNP Backcountry Permit required)
-Jumpup Point (second night campsite, National Forest/no permit required)
-Kanab Point (third night campsite, GCNP Backcountry Permit required)
-SB Point (fourth night campsite, GCNP Backcountry Permit required)
-Toroweap (fifth-sixth night campsite, touristy but still primitive GCNP Backcountry Permit required)
-Whitmore Canyon Overlook (seventh night campsite, BLM/no permit required)

Buddy of mine is working on some really slick platform systems, the build quality and modularity will probably give Goose Gear and ARB/Outback a run for their money. Drawers aren't there yet, but I'm probably going to switch over when I redo my drawer setup, either by mounting ARB drawers to his platform or rebuilding a new set. ARB is nice, but they don't make a dedicated platform on the 5th gen so you have to drill into the subfloor and it leaves the sides unfinished.

While my drawers and tire carrier are perfect so far, I wish there was a better way to gain quick access to some of my gear:

    - I had to open both swingouts and open the hatch, then open the drawers to access recovery gear when winching last trip. Didn't cause any issues, but I'm thinking it might be inconvenient to have them all in the rear. Cheap option: buy a recovery bag, leave it in the rear passenger seat. Better option: third drawer where the rear passenger seat is?
    - No good way to carry more than 10 gallons of fluid. Can't bring water inside the truck because of limited space, can't carry more than 2 jerries on the CBI carrier. Cheap option: have someone carry my water who was a Tacoma

That's not such a bad idea. If I moved all my recovery gear to the front somehow, I could probably condense everything into a single drawer. Probably save a bit of weight too.

Awesome, thanks! I saw on the GCNP website that the North Rim is "closed" from 11/1 - 5/15, and you were there during this time, clearly that didn't effect your trip. Is it just the visitor center and the main paved road out to the North Rim lodge, Hwy 67, that is closed?

Thanks for doing research before heading out, and sorry for not mentioning it!

The North Rim visitor center is closed during that time, but there is still access on AZ67 (paved road to the North Rim), which closes whenever there is heavy snowfall. This year it happened literally a day after we went through that section, so whatever trails we cleared of trees were blocked by snowfall a day later, lol. You will not be able to access Point Sublime from AZ67 once the road closes, and typically the rangers will chain the gate closed from that side in inclement weather. Luckily we didn't run into any access issues. Usually AZ67 closes on Dec. 1, or when snow blocks the route whichever comes first.

If you want, you can probably access Point Sublime from the Kaibab National Forest like we did, but its a lot longer. We only took AZ67 because we were running 3-4 hours behind schedule because we needed to clear trails. Keep in mind you'll need a permit for Sublime anyhow, may want to check in with NPS before your trip to check on trail conditions.

None of the other sections we hit besides the run from Parasawampitts/Sublime have seasonal road closures. The remainder of the canyon lie below 7000ft so you don't have to worry as much about snow. Just be prepared in case it rains- wet clay is pretty fun.

Fantastic. May just do a day trip to Sublime and camp in the NF, still doing research but you have helped greatly. Thanks again for the info, your pics and trip reports have me counting down the days, I really just started planning the trip and was looking at all of these areas then your guys trip report showed up and covered a bunch of the spots I was looking at already!

Sweet truck too btw, love a clean 5th gen build!
